Comic book villains are typically portrayed as the opposite of heroes, dedicated to causing harm. But Marvel Comics often gives its villains more complex backgrounds and motivations. Many of Marvel’s most famous villains turned to evil after years of being mistreated and hated. While some are simply cruel people who enjoy causing chaos, others became criminals because they felt they had no other options. This focuses on the Marvel villains who suffered the most difficult childhoods or experienced the worst abuse, leading them down a path of darkness.
These villains weren’t born evil; their tragic pasts – including the loss of loved ones and deeply personal struggles – shaped them into the figures we recognize today. They suffered greatly, and that pain is at the core of who they are.
10) Rhino

Rhino appears to be a simple, strong criminal, but his life hasn’t been easy. Originally Aleksei Sytsevich, a young Russian immigrant, he turned to gang life to provide for his struggling family. He agreed to participate in a government experiment that promised a lot of money, hoping to improve their lives. The experiment gave him incredible strength, but the scientists didn’t reveal that the changes would be permanent. Aleksei was stuck inside the rhino suit, fused to his skin, and forced to live a life he never chose.
9) Red Skull

Johann Schmidt, better known as Red Skull, is one of Marvel’s most evil villains, but his tragic past explains how he became so full of hatred. His father attempted to kill him as a baby after his mother died during childbirth, but doctors intervened. After his father’s suicide, Johann grew up in an orphanage where he suffered constant abuse. As a teen, he was homeless and frequently arrested. When he killed a woman who spurned his advances, he enjoyed the feeling of power it gave him. This intense rage eventually led him to join the Nazi party, where Adolf Hitler saw him as the ideal figurehead for the Third Reich – the Red Skull.
8) Vermin

Edward Whelan, now known as Vermin, endured a deeply traumatic childhood. He suffered abuse at the hands of his father and later lived on the streets, struggling with homelessness. This vulnerable state made him a target for the evil Baron Zemo and Armin Zola, who subjected him to horrific experiments. These experiments twisted Edward into a monstrous, rat-like creature, stripping him of his human qualities and mental stability. Now, Vermin prowls the sewers of New York City as a savage, cannibalistic killer. Though a small part of the original Edward still yearns for redemption, the monstrous Vermin personality consistently overpowers him.
7) Lady Deathstrike

Yuriki Oyama, known as Lady Deathstrike, underwent extreme body modification and abandoned her humanity to carry on the dark legacy of her cruel father. Lord Dark Wind, a scarred crime boss, routinely scarred his children. After Yuriki’s brothers perished obeying his commands, she killed him to liberate her lover. Tragically, her lover then took his own life, remaining loyal to her father. Devastated by this loss, Yuriki embraced her father’s brutality. Learning that Wolverine had received an adamantium treatment invented by Lord Dark Wind, she became convinced he had stolen her father’s life’s work and vowed revenge. This led her to enhance her own body with adamantium, ultimately becoming Lady Deathstrike.
6) Apocalypse

Born in Ancient Egypt roughly 5,000 years ago, En Sabah Nur – better known as Apocalypse – was one of the first mutants ever recorded. Because of his unusual gray skin, he was seen as a monster from birth and abandoned in the desert as a baby. He was eventually found and raised by a group of raiders, learning to fight and survive. However, his adopted clan was killed by the Pharaoh’s army. Though Apocalypse sought revenge, he was captured and forced into slavery, where he endured years of torture. Constantly facing prejudice and attempts on his life due to his appearance and powers, he finally embraced the monstrous role society had assigned him, becoming the ruthless tyrant known as Apocalypse.
5) Lizard

Scientist Curt Conners had a good life with his wife and son, even after losing an arm in war. Driven to help others with amputations and restore his own limb, he experimented with a powerful serum based on reptile regeneration. While the serum successfully regrew his arm, it also tragically transformed him into the Lizard – a monstrous, reptilian creature. Despite years of trying to find a cure, Curt could never permanently stop the transformation, always reverting to his savage Lizard form. Tragically, as the Lizard, he even harmed his own family, ultimately destroying his life and theirs in his quest to help others.
4) Doctor Doom

Let me tell you about Doctor Doom. His story is truly heartbreaking. He was born in Latveria, to a Romanian tribe, and lost his mother young – she was pulled into Hell by the demon Mephisto. It didn’t stop there. His father, Werner, tried to help a Baron’s wife, but when he couldn’t save her, they had to flee. Tragically, Werner died protecting young Victor from a blizzard. Later, while in college, Victor tried to bring his mother back, but an experiment went horribly wrong, leaving him scarred. He actually chose to make those scars permanent, forging his iconic mask while the burns were still fresh. Honestly, after everything he’s been through, it’s no wonder he wants to control his own fate – and the world’s. He’s a man driven by suffering, and he refuses to be a victim anymore.
3) Gorr the God Butcher

Gorr grew up on a harsh, desolate planet, leading him to believe the gods didn’t care about those who suffered. His life was filled with tragedy from childhood – his mother was killed by predators, and as resources dwindled, his pregnant wife died in an earthquake. He then watched all six of his children slowly starve to death. After burying his last child and losing faith in his tribe’s beliefs, he was exiled. Near death, Gorr stumbled upon two dying gods and claimed the incredibly powerful Necrosword. Driven by his pain and loss, he vowed to destroy all gods who had abandoned his people.
2) Galactus

Galan became Galactus, the Devourer of Worlds, simply because he survived when his entire civilization perished. As a gifted scientist from the ancient planet Taa, he lived through the end of the previous universe. Deadly radiation wiped out everyone else on his world, leaving Galan utterly alone. Then, the consciousness of the Sixth Cosmos fused with him, transforming him into Galactus. With the birth of the new universe, Galactus was cursed to endlessly consume planets and destroy life to satisfy his insatiable hunger.
1) Magneto

Max Eisenhardt, better known as Magneto, developed a deep hatred for humans after enduring immense suffering. Born Jewish in the early 1930s, he and his family were imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp where his parents and sister were killed. Even after escaping and building a new life in Russia with a wife and daughter, tragedy struck again. When the KGB discovered Max was a mutant, they deliberately set fire to his home with his daughter inside. This horrific event pushed Max to his breaking point, leading him to kill the agents responsible. Having witnessed the absolute worst of human cruelty, Magneto resolved to ensure mutantkind would rise to power and take their place as the dominant species on Earth.
