Lots of video games have been turned into movies and TV shows, but surprisingly, Metal Gear Solid hasn’t been one of them. It seems like a perfect fit for Hollywood, with its exciting stories about spies and a cast of unforgettable characters. However, despite several attempts over the years, a Metal Gear Solid movie hasn’t materialized – until now. A new team of filmmakers has just been brought on board to finally bring the story of Solid Snake to the big screen.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the directors of Final Destination: Bloodlines, Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, will be directing the upcoming Metal Gear Solid adaptation. This project is part of a new agreement they’ve made with Sony Pictures. Avi and Ari Arad will continue to produce. Currently, there’s no information about when production will begin or when the movie might be released.
Will Lipovsky and Stein’s Metal Gear Solid Movie Actually Happen?

Usually, news of new directors joining a film is a good sign. Sony securing Lipovsky and Stein for Metal Gear Solid so soon after signing a deal with them suggests the studio is making this project a priority. However, a Metal Gear movie has been in the works for almost twenty years, and development hasn’t been easy. Lipovsky and Stein are the latest in a long line of directors attached to the project – Jordan Vogt-Roberts was set to direct back in 2014, but that ultimately didn’t happen.
Lipovsky and Stein are in high demand after the huge success of Final Destination Bloodlines, which earned over $317 million worldwide. This success has opened doors to several new projects. They’re currently set to direct and produce an animated Venom movie for Sony, and they also have an original sci-fi film called The Earthling in development. With so many opportunities, it’s likely they’ll have to choose which project to focus on first, and some might be delayed or even cancelled.
The Metal Gear franchise is incredibly well-known and popular, making it a strong candidate for a movie or TV adaptation, especially with so many video game projects currently in the works. The recent remake, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, has also renewed interest in the series and brought in new fans. Now would be a great time to capitalize on that momentum. However, Sony tends to prioritize its Marvel properties like Venom, so Metal Gear might have to wait.
The Metal Gear games, known for their movie-like quality thanks to Hideo Kojima’s creative vision (and frequent film references), surprisingly haven’t been adapted for the screen yet. Previous attempts haven’t been successful, but the current producers may simply be waiting for the perfect moment. Ari Arad has previously stated the importance of getting the adaptation right, which explains the careful approach to development. With Sony clearly enthusiastic about the new directors, the project might finally gain momentum.
