With Uma Thurman confirmed to return as Charley Brown in Season 2 of Dexter: Resurrection, fans are already speculating about what role she’ll play. As one of the few people who knows Dexter’s (Michael C. Hall) secret, Charley could end up helping him – or becoming his enemy.
Bringing Charley into the story could fill the void left by Mia LaPierre, or Lady Vengeance (Krysten Ritter), whose death in Season 1 disappointed many fans who expected her to be a more significant character. Though Dexter has interacted with various women, both as targets and allies – like Lumen (Julia Stiles) and Lila (Jaime Murray) – his connection with Charley promises a unique dynamic. The fact that Charley might have compromised her own ethics to protect her mother adds an intriguing layer to the plot.
Charley Could Play the Role Mia Might Have Had in ‘Dexter: Resurrection’

Dexter initially saw Mia as a potential ally, believing she, like him, killed according to a personal code. However, he soon discovered this wasn’t true. Unlike the public image of female killers, Mia simply enjoyed the act of killing and chose her victims randomly. This clashed with Dexter’s strict moral rules, and though he didn’t kill her himself, he found a way to stop her. Ultimately, Leon killed Mia to prevent her from revealing his secrets.
Charley is a complex character with a hidden depth. She used to be a highly trained Special Ops soldier and later became Leon’s bodyguard, willing to use force – even kill – to keep him safe, all while knowing he was involved in terrible activities. We eventually learn her motivation: she needed money for her mother’s expensive medical care. Leon offered her a way out, and she accepted, even though she understood her actions were wrong. Like Dexter, she’s technically a serial killer, but she appears to operate with a personal sense of right and wrong.
Okay, so here’s the really twisted part. Charley’s got Dexter dead to rights – she knows he’s the Bay Harbor Butcher. But she’s not exactly innocent either; she has a file detailing all the shady stuff she did working for the billionaire. The problem? Dexter made a deal with her at the end of Season One. He promised to destroy that file if she let him go, all to protect his son, Harrison. So, if he keeps his word, Charley walks free, knowing everything about Dexter, and he’s stuck with a dangerous secret still out there. It’s a seriously messy situation.
How Charley Can Play Into ‘Dexter: Resurrection’

The show’s ending revealed Charley moved with her mother to Amherst, Pennsylvania – a town only about two hours from New York City. Now that we know she’s coming back, it makes us wonder if Dexter will go to her, or if she’ll return to New York instead.
She holds a position of power, and if her mother’s life is at risk, she might be forced to use it. If her mother dies, Charley could become consumed with seeking revenge on whoever she blames. After Dexter revealed and killed Leon, Charley lost both her income and her mother’s medical care. While escaping Leon’s control might seem like a relief, grief can be overwhelming and lead to impulsive actions.
Alternatively, she might be seeking employment related to her skills and is offering help to Dexter in return for money to cover her mother’s medical bills, or to find meaning after her mother is gone. She understands Dexter’s world, and with Leon out of the picture and Dexter appearing more approachable and less threatening, they could potentially reach an agreement. She might be able to assist Dexter in the way he wanted Mia to, or cover for him while he acts on his darker impulses. A romantic connection between them is possible, which would add another romantic interest to Dexter’s history.
Season 2 will center around Dexter’s pursuit of the New York Ripper, a role played by Brian Cox. Evidence suggests the killer’s identity—Don Framt—and weapon were documented in a file possessed by Leon. With Leon’s file and Charley’s potential knowledge, Dexter may turn to her for assistance in catching this elusive criminal, his ‘White Whale’.
Charley Has Mia’s Blood on Her Hands in ‘Dexter: Resurrection’

It’s also possible Mia’s death – even though some people believe she wasn’t murdered – ultimately leads back to Charley. She paid off a prison guard who had a gambling problem, and this same guard was present when Mia was found dead in her cell. The evidence suggests he killed her and made it look like a suicide, after being paid by Charley at Leon’s request.
Because Charley possesses a sense of right and wrong and is capable of love, she may be deeply troubled by her actions, especially all the people she killed for Leon. It’s worth noting that many, if not all, of her victims were also killers. This makes Charley a parallel to Dexter, but driven by different reasons. In fact, she’s precisely the kind of person Dexter wanted Mia to become.
In the original series, Lumen was the first person to partner with Dexter in his killings. She was a young woman who, after a brutal sexual assault, sought Dexter’s help to get revenge on her attackers. Unlike Dexter, she wasn’t a psychopath and didn’t have an internal compulsion to kill. After achieving her revenge, she felt relieved and moved on with her life. Importantly, she remains alive and is one of the few people who definitively knows Dexter was the Bay Harbor Butcher.
Dexter was hopeful that Mia shared his own moral code, believing she targeted only those who hurt women – a response to the abuse her sister suffered years ago at the hands of her mother’s boyfriend. He thought they were kindred spirits, both living by a similar set of rules. But when he discovered Mia wasn’t who he believed her to be, he felt isolated all over again.
Charley is a good fit for the job because she’s a blend of Mia and Lumen. She’s more skilled and confident than Mia, but shares Lumen’s potential sense of morality. While Lumen tends to be cautious, Charley can be quite imposing. However, unlike Mia, Charley would probably only resort to killing those who deserve it.
The possibilities for this character in Season 2 of Dexter: Resurrection are really exciting. The great news is that Thurman is coming back, and we’re all wondering how she’ll fit into the story. Will she be someone who’s become fascinated with killers? Perhaps she’ll want to eliminate Dexter, knowing his secret. Or maybe she’ll want to help him, using her knowledge of both Framt and the other killers whose files Dexter took. I’m eager to see what happens!
