Thrash Stars Reveal What Makes Netflix’s New Shark Movie Different From B Movies Like Sharknado (Exclusive)

Netflix’s new thriller, Thrash, combines two popular movie tropes: a large-scale disaster and killer sharks – a classic and often effective combination. While Jaws is the first shark disaster film many people think of, the Sharknado franchise has also successfully used this premise. Thrash initially drew comparisons to Sharknado, despite having a different feel, and the cast recently explained what makes their film unique compared to the Sharknado series.

ComicBook recently spoke with the stars of Thrash, Djimon Hounsou, Whitney Peak, and Phoebe Dynevor. Dynevor explained the film’s main focus, highlighting its important themes, particularly the impact of climate change – a key concern for director Adam McKay and Tommy. While the sharks provide a thrilling element, the movie is grounded in real-world issues and centers on three characters simply trying to overcome the challenges life throws their way.

Thrash Is A True Survival Thriller, So Don’t Expect Shark Filled Tornadoes

Although both films involve sharks, their overall feel is quite different. Thrash is a classic disaster movie with dangerous sharks, but according to stars Hounsou and Dynevor, the story truly focuses on the characters and their struggles. It’s their individual and collective journeys that make you care about whether they survive.

Hounsou thought the film would be compelling because it explores the reality of human-caused climate change and its effects on the world, like failing infrastructure. The story centers around two women who find themselves stranded as a result of these issues.

Dynevor shared that she particularly enjoyed the connection between her character and the other, as well as the film’s exploration of motherhood – specifically the powerful instinct to protect one’s child and the difficulties surrounding childbirth. She felt many aspects of the movie were very meaningful.

Thrash puts you right in the middle of a Category 5 hurricane, experiencing the disaster through the eyes of three different people. As the storm tears through a coastal town and residents struggle to cope, they discover an even more terrifying danger lurking beneath the waves: a group of aggressive sharks.

Thrash will begin streaming on Netflix on April 10, 2026.
