Netflix has recently unveiled a significant horror film from this year exclusively on its platform, catching subscribers off guard. This chilling movie will be available for free streaming for an extended period of 18 months. After the expiration of this term, it is set to depart Netflix and appear on Hulu instead. However, during this period, it remains a unique offering that can only be streamed on Netflix, making it a must-watch for horror enthusiasts.
At present, the latest horror film can only be streamed on the American version of Netflix. As of now, there’s no specific release date for when it will become available elsewhere. If you have a Netflix subscription and are currently in the U.S., you can already enjoy Until Dawn, a movie inspired by the 2015 PlayStation game with the same name. It’s important to note that although both share the same title and universe, the film presents an entirely new self-contained narrative unrelated to the game. Moreover, it doesn’t adhere to the ‘butterfly effect’ concept from the game, a feature that sets it apart.
David F. Sandberg, who has previously directed movies like Lights Out, Annabelle: Creation, and Shazam, was responsible for directing Until Dawn. Contrary to expectations, this adaptation of a popular game didn’t receive the same acclaim from critics as its source material. Its rating on Rotten Tomatoes is 53. In simpler terms, it did not impress many film critics. Similarly, it did not seem to resonate with the audience either, as indicated by its slightly better but still modest audience score of 67 on Rotten Tomatoes.
Although Until Dawn didn’t get great reviews, it still managed to perform decently in theaters. Produced by PlayStation Productions, the film was made on a budget of $15 million but grossed $53.6 million at the box office. Whether this success is enough for a sequel to be produced hasn’t been decided yet, as there’s currently no news about a follow-up.
For those choosing to watch Until Dawn on Netflix, you’ll find a running time of approximately 103 minutes. The talented ensemble includes Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Odessa A’zion, Ji-young Yoo, Belmont Cameli, Maia Mitchell, and Peter Stormare. Be prepared for an R rating due to its graphic horror, gory scenes, and strong language.
