Vanessa Kirby, who plays Sue Storm in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, shares her aspirations for Sue’s journey within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. On a recent episode of Happy Sad Confused podcast, when asked about Sue’s potential development in future appearances, Kirby expressed excitement about delving into Sue’s villainous alter ego, Malice. She finds it intriguing that Sue possesses the ability to embody her darker self but often chooses a path of altruism instead.
Kirby expressed delight in the presence of “Malice” within the character, stating, “It brings me joy since I strive to comprehend… All members of the Fantastic Four return from their accident and choose different paths with their powers as a family. Reed leans heavily into mathematics, science, and technological advancement, perhaps feeling guilty for what transpired and aiming to better the world in this manner. Sue establishes a future foundation, visiting every nation’s leader and convincing them to disarm and eliminate their armies. Her emotional intelligence is remarkable, as she once said, ‘If you’re not careful, I can give you an aneurysm in a second.’ This line resonated with me because it reflects her ability to exert control without always doing so, demonstrating the power of restraint. In this way, I have always admired Malice because it represents a part of her that yearns to surface.
Leading up to the premiere of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”, Kirby expressed her appreciation for the character Malice. She mentioned that she aimed to bring out some elements of Sue’s complex personality in her performance, demonstrating that Sue is more than just a typical kind and nurturing mother figure. Malice was first introduced in the 1985 issue #280 of “Fantastic Four”, where Sue was subjected to Psycho Man’s emotional control.
Kirby, together with her fellow stars Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach from the original “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”, are planning to reappear in both “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars”. Furthermore, there are rumors that Marvel is working on a new “Fantastic Four” movie, implying they plan to continue featuring the Fantastic Four for an extended duration.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Psycho Man might not make an appearance, but Sue Storm, along with the Fantastic Four, are set for a tumultuous journey in their initial on-screen outings. In ‘First Steps’, they grapple with the ominous presence of Galactus, who seeks to annihilate their home as a consequence of Reed and Sue’s refusal to offer up their child, Franklin, as a sacrifice. Following this, they will endeavor to preserve the multiverse from Doctor Doom. The characters are in for a challenging ride, and if hints of Malice within Sue during her diplomatic discussions with world leaders in ‘First Steps’ are any indication, this aspect of her character may escalate significantly as she confronts these trials throughout the Multiverse Saga. It’s possible that Sue may succumb to Malice, viewing it as a means to gain an upper hand against adversaries.
In a potential sequel for the Fantastic Four, introducing Malice could offer an intriguing narrative twist. By giving viewers time to build a connection with this portrayal of Sue across multiple films, her eventual descent into darkness would pack a greater emotional punch. This struggle against Malice increases the story’s tension as her family works tirelessly to help her overcome this dark force. Marvel has already delved into themes like mental health and trauma in stories such as Thunderbolts, and Malice could offer another perspective on these issues. Once Sue Storm, created by Kirby, is more deeply ingrained within the MCU, fans will have a clearer understanding of whether or not Malice might indeed be part of the storyline’s future.
