Many viewers find themselves consuming a large portion of their streaming content from classic network sitcoms, surprisingly enough. This is understandable as these shows are enjoyable to watch multiple times, but they can be challenging to locate consistently. Luckily, one of the top sitcoms from the 90’s became available on Hulu this week, and starting next week on July 31st, its 2019 reboot will also premiere on the platform.
The show under discussion is titled “Mad About You,” a comedic television series featuring Helen Hunt and Paul Reiser as the couple Jamie and Paul Buchman. This duo portrays a young married pair residing in New York City, chronicling their lives from their early days as newlyweds to later stages involving careers, friendships, and family growth. In this show, Paul is depicted as a documentary filmmaker, while Jamie works in public relations. They share a home in Greenwich Village with two pets and eventually welcome a baby girl into their lives.

The show was broadcast on NBC alongside other popular shows from that time, including “Friends” and “Seinfeld,” which remain popular in the streaming age. In fact, there were several instances where these shows crossed over. Notably, Lisa Kudrow’s character Phoebe’s twin sister Ursula appeared frequently in both series. She worked as a waitress at Paul and Jamie’s favorite bar, often serving them poorly to create comedic moments. Interestingly, the actor playing Jamie made an appearance on “Friends” in Season 1, Episode 16, mistakenly taking Phoebe for Ursula.
For seven seasons between 1992 and 1999, the popular sitcom ‘Mad About You’ graced our screens, and then made a comeback with a 12-episode revival in 2019. Viewing it was challenging due to its exclusive airing as a “Spectrum Original” in the U.S., but this is soon to change. The original seven seasons are now available on Hulu, and starting next week, the revival episodes will join them.
Just like many hit sitcoms today, various streaming platforms have been vying to acquire the rights to air Mad About You. Given its historical ties to NBC (its original network’s parent company), Peacock might seem the most fitting home. However, its appearance on Hulu signifies its worth as a licensed program in the ongoing competition among streaming services, often referred to as the “streaming wars.” Its location may change again, but for devoted fans, it can still be enjoyed through DVD collections.
In its day, “Mad About You” garnered praise from both critics and viewers alike, and over the years, it has continued to be cherished by sitcom enthusiasts. It’s often enjoyed as a cozy viewing experience, much like “Friends,” yet it offers more personal narratives centered around a compact group of characters. The reboot received mixed reactions, but many still viewed it as a fitting continuation, albeit not quite able to recapture the enchantment of the original.
You can watch the new revival of “Mad About You” right now on Hulu! The updated series will join the streaming platform on Thursday, 31st July.
