Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Series Finds Its New Home

The brooding atmosphere of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin” has a new dwelling place with Webtoon, an app known for its vertical-scrolling comics that have gained widespread popularity. At San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) 2025, Webtoon officially confirmed the arrival of “The Last Ronin” on their platform, as part of a collaboration with IDW Publishing, the original publisher of the comic and graphic novel. It’s worth noting that “The Last Ronin” won’t be the only IDW comic to find its way onto Webtoon, as titles like “Godzilla: Unnatural Disasters”, “Sonic the Hedgehog”, and “Beneath the Trees” are already accessible on this platform.

Webtoon recently announced it’s teaming up with Dark Horse Comics to publish the “Cyberpunk 2077” comic. Meanwhile, “TMNT: The Last Ronin” will debut on August 23rd, followed by “Cyberpunk 2077” on August 8th. Webtoon has given us a sneak peek at how both series will be adapted to the traditional vertical style they’re known for. Interestingly, “TMNT: The Last Ronin” started as a five-issue mini-series in comic shops before being compiled into a graphic novel. Readers would flip through it like an American book, left to right. In contrast, Webtoon is famous for having users scroll up and down on their devices to read comics online – a method that’s becoming more popular these days.

TMNT: The Last Ronin Is Coming to Webtoon

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ninja” – This narrative explores an alternate future of the series, where three out of the four turtle siblings meet their end, leaving only one to wage war against The Hand. The concept for this story was initially envisioned by the franchise’s originators, Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, with comic writer Tom Waltz penning the script. This tale unfolds in a harsh, neo-noir atmosphere where New York City is isolated from the nation and governed by the wicked descendant of the Shredder. The Last Ninja gained immense popularity, with the compilation of all five issues reaching the top of the New York Times Bestseller list and selling out quickly.

The series garnered acclaim for its gloomy mood, rough illustrations, and portrayal of the remaining turtle brother. The success of the title has spawned two sequels titled “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin – Lost Years” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin II – Re-Evolution“. A video game derived from “The Last Ronin” was also announced in 2023. In addition, a mature, real-life film adaptation is being developed by Paramount Pictures under the supervision of Walter Hamada and penned by Tyler Burton Smith. The collaboration with Webtoon aims to introduce the story to new audiences, allowing them to explore the somber world inhabited by the last surviving ninja turtle.
