I’m Shocked These 3 Fantasy Franchises Still Don’t Have MMORPGs (But It Might Be For The Best)

Popular fantasy worlds like The Elder Scrolls and The Lord of the Rings have often included massively multiplayer online games (MMOs). It’s no surprise – playing with friends in a familiar fantasy setting is incredibly appealing. The Lord of the Rings Online has been thriving for 19 years, and The Elder Scrolls Online remains a great way to enjoy the latest stories in Tamriel. However, some major fantasy franchises surprisingly haven’t yet had a large-scale MMO, despite seeming like a perfect fit.

I’m a big fan of fantasy and video games, especially those with swords or magic, so I’ve been watching the online gaming world closely. It’s always surprised me that some of the most popular fantasy stories don’t have their own online games where fans can play together. However, since many existing online games are struggling to stay popular, maybe it’s a good thing those brands haven’t jumped in – at least, not for now.

3) The Witcher

The Witcher is incredibly popular in many forms – starting with the books, then the video games, and now the TV show. Despite this success, no one has yet created a massive multiplayer online game (MMO) set in its world. However, there’s definitely interest – many fans would love to experience the world of The Witcher with their friends in an online RPG.

While popular, the Witcher series might not be ideally suited for a large online multiplayer game. The stories usually focus on Geralt and his small group of friends, and the world, aside from them, can feel like a typical fantasy setting. Having many Witchers interacting together could change that core feel. Still, it’s surprising that a well-known fantasy series like this hasn’t yet offered a major multiplayer experience for its fans.

2) Game of Thrones

Several efforts have been made to create a Game of Thrones massively multiplayer online role-playing game, or MMO. One project, Game of Thrones: Seven Kingdoms, was started during the peak of the TV show’s popularity, but it was ultimately cancelled. Another game, Winter is Coming, offered a mix of real-time strategy and MMO elements, but it was developed by a smaller company and didn’t gain much traction with fans. This leaves many wondering why a large-scale, high-quality MMO based on the popular fantasy series hasn’t been released.

While the Game of Thrones books are still unfinished, the TV series has led to several spin-offs. However, the franchise hasn’t found much success in the world of video games. Previous Game of Thrones games haven’t performed well, which likely explains why HBO hasn’t invested heavily in a large-scale, high-quality online role-playing game. Considering the quality of past attempts, that might have been a wise decision.

1) Harry Potter

It’s surprising that, despite its massive popularity, a Harry Potter massively multiplayer online game (MMO) doesn’t exist yet. Even with recent controversies surrounding the author, Harry Potter remains a huge fantasy brand, and Warner Bros. actively uses it in various projects, like TV shows and baking competitions. Similar to attempts with Game of Thrones, several Harry Potter MMO projects have been cancelled, making it remarkable that one hasn’t been successfully launched.

There’s been talk that the next Hogwarts Legacy game might be an online multiplayer game, or at least have more multiplayer features than the first one. While some fans are unsure about this idea, a Harry Potter MMO would likely be very popular. Hogwarts Legacy‘s success shows there’s still a strong interest in the Wizarding World from both longtime and new fans. However, many people would actually prefer a direct sequel to Hogwarts Legacy instead of an MMO, because they enjoy the immersive, single-player experience. So, continuing with a single-player format might be the best option for future games.
