New PlayStation Report Could Spell Doom for PS Store on PS3

A recently discovered report suggests Sony may finally shut down the PlayStation Store on the PS3. In 2021, Sony initially announced plans to close the store, a move that upset many fans. Due to the backlash, Sony reversed its decision and kept the store running on the older console. While there haven’t been any further announcements about closing it, this new report indicates Sony might now be reconsidering that decision and could move forward with a closure.

PlayStation 3’s user base is shrinking quickly, according to reliable sources like @millieamand. At the beginning of the year, over a million people were still playing on PS3, but that number has dropped by more than 75%. By March, there were only around 240,000 active users worldwide. This steep decline seems to be linked to the removal of the Netflix app from the console in March, which many players were still using.

Because so few people are still using the PS3 each month, Sony is likely to eventually close the PS Store for the system. While they decided against closing it in 2021, Sony has repeatedly indicated the PS3 store won’t stay open forever. Maintaining the store costs money, and with so few users remaining, it’s becoming easier to justify closing it as a cost-saving measure.

Just to reiterate, Sony hasn’t officially announced any changes regarding the PS3 store, and it might not close down soon. However, if fewer people continue to use the PS3, Sony may eventually discontinue its remaining services. We’ll keep you updated with any news on ComicBook when and if that happens.
