In a turn of events that could only be described as the sort of calamity one might encounter in a particularly gripping melodrama, the KelpDAO exploit has sent shockwaves through the hallowed halls of decentralized finance (DeFi), leaving confidence wobbling like a tipsy giraffe on roller skates. Since the fateful date of April 18, the total value locked in this digital wonderland has plummeted from a dazzling $99.5 billion to a rather less impressive $83.7 billion.
Enter Aave, the plucky knight in shining armor-or perhaps more accurately, in a somewhat tarnished but still functional suit of blockchain armor-who is now leading the charge with a valiant “DeFi United” initiative. This noble endeavor has garnered support from various major protocols, all with the ambitious goal of restoring faith in rsETH, the liquid restaking token at the center of this financial tempest.
Stani Kulechov Stands Firm, Pledging 5,000 ETH as Aave’s DeFi United Takes Shape
On the infamous day of April 18, dastardly attackers executed a heist that would make even the most hardened criminals blush, draining an astonishing 116,500 rsETH-valued at a jaw-dropping $292 million-from KelpDAO’s cross-chain bridge. The stolen tokens were then promptly deposited as collateral on Aave V3, where the rogue hacker proceeded to borrow large sums of Wrapped Ether (WETH), because why not?
With the rsETH now as unbacked as a trust fund baby with no investments, the resulting positions are effectively unliquidatable-leaving Aave with a pile of bad debt that would make any accountant weep into their spreadsheets.

In the midst of this financial debacle, panic withdrawals erupted like popcorn at a movie premiere. Aave’s total deposits took a nosedive from $45.8 billion to a mere $28.6 billion-a staggering decline of $17.2 billion, which sounds like a figure pulled straight from the script of a tragic play. According to the ever-watchful sages over at LayerZero, early indicators suggest that the notorious Lazarus Group’s TraderTraitor is likely responsible for this colossal hack-talk about a plot twist!
In a post on X (which is still somehow a thing), Aave announced that several gallant participants had stepped up, pledging their support to restore the backing of rsETH. Lido Finance, in a display of goodwill that would make even the most jaded cynic smile, submitted a proposal to contribute up to 2,500 staked ether (stETH) to a dedicated relief vehicle.
Mantle Treasury followed suit with its own generous offer, proposing to lend up to 30,000 ETH to Aave DAO. And let’s not forget our protagonist, Stani Kulechov, who personally committed 5,000 ETH because apparently, saving the world (or at least the DeFi world) is just another Tuesday for him.
“Aave is my life’s work and we’re working nonstop to find the best possible outcome for users,” Kulechov proclaimed, channeling the enthusiasm of a schoolboy who just discovered the wonders of lemonade stands. “I’m personally contributing 5000 ETH to DeFi United as we continue working together with partners on formalizing more commitments. I’m working to see this resolved and market conditions normalized as soon as possible,” he added, probably while adjusting his superhero cape.
EtherFi Foundation also threw its hat in the ring with another 5,000 ETH, while Golem contributed a humble 1,000 ETH. The initiative has also garnered support from other illustrious names such as Ethena, LayerZero, Tydro, and the Ink Foundation-because nothing says teamwork like a good old-fashioned financial rescue operation.
Now our partners at @fraxfinance join the fold.
They will soon share a DAO proposal with details on the collaboration.
DeFi United.

In a final act of benevolence, Aave also paused rsETH reserves across Ethereum Core, Arbitrum, Base, Mantle, and Linea to support recovery. Because, let’s face it, when the going gets tough, the tough go into damage control mode.
