How will Joe Tate get his comeuppance in Emmerdale? All the theories ahead of dramatic week

Since Joe Tate came back to Emmerdale in 2024, he’s been repeatedly getting away with terrible actions, all to benefit himself.

I’m honestly shocked by how far Joe will go. It’s terrifying – from being responsible for a deadly accident to actually planning to stab his own uncle just to steal a kidney? There are truly no limits to what he’s capable of, and it’s deeply disturbing to watch.

Joe captured Victoria Sugden defending herself against her brother, John, and used this information to manipulate her. He then pressured Robert into framing Moira Dingle, ultimately allowing Joe to take control of Butler’s Farm.

After learning Joe was responsible for her imprisonment, Moira vows revenge. The question is, will she be the one to finally stop him, or will someone else bring his destructive behavior to an end?

Joe has been acting up for too long, and we’ve collected all the possible ways he might finally face the consequences! Read on to explore the most popular theories.

How will Joe Tate get his comeuppance in Emmerdale?

Moira Dingle takes aim with a shotgun

Okay, so next week on the show, things really explode. Moira is absolutely livid – rightfully so, considering Joe nearly ruined her life trying to get her off the farm. She corners him, shotgun in hand, demanding answers about him setting her up with those awful slavery accusations. Just when you think it’s a direct confrontation, Graham Foster shows up, but Moira is having none of it – she’s determined to get to the bottom of this, and she’s not backing down, even with him there. It’s a tense standoff, to say the least!

Moira has just gotten out of jail, so would she really risk going back by shooting Joe? More likely, she’ll try to get him to confess, or simply scare him into submission with threats and leave him terrified.

It’s still unclear if Moira will directly hurt Joe, but there are many other, smarter strategies to defeat her.

Cain Dingle chooses trickery over violence

I’m really worried about Cain – he’s facing surgery for prostate cancer, which is tough enough. But honestly, if he ever finds out what Joe did to his wife, all bets are off. I can just picture him, even stuck in a hospital bed, already plotting revenge. It’s going to be explosive if that truth comes out.

Could he finally change his ways and avoid violence? Cain knows people with diverse talents, and it would be a clever move to have someone forge documents, pretend to be a police officer, and ‘arrest’ Joe.

Dingle’s plan was to either get Moira her pub back, or thoroughly frighten Joe into never betraying Cain’s family again. Unless something significant happens, it’s not worth the effort of getting involved.

Dawn Fletcher plays the long game

It was frustrating to watch Dawn (Olivia Bromley) so quickly forgive her fiancé, Joe, especially after she’d just discovered he’d been deceiving the Sugdens.

However, she’s about to find out he betrayed Moira, and Dawn might finally decide she’s had enough and end their relationship.

It seems the character is set to depart from Emmerdale. After playing a secondary role to Joe for some time, it’s time for Dawn to take center stage and get even with him.

Fans are hoping Dawn will either expose Joe’s crimes and get him sent to prison, or take all his money and run. Either way, she could be the one to finally get revenge on him, leaving him heartbroken and giving her a dramatic exit from the show.

Robert Sugden and Aaron Dingle avenge Victoria

Years ago, Robert would have already found a way to get back at Joe. Though prison has changed him, he still has a chance to avenge what happened to Victoria.

Okay, so I’ve been watching Emmerdale, and Aaron Dingle – Danny Miller, you know – really surprised me lately. He actually talked his way into messing with Joe, instead of just punching him, which is a big step! Now I’m hoping that cleverness rubs off on Robert, his fiancé. If they could pull off a really brilliant con, they might just take complete control of Emmerdale Farm and finally wipe that arrogant look off Joe’s face. I’m rooting for them!

There has to be a way for ‘Robron’ to trick Joe into taking the blame for what happened to Moira. He’s gotten away with terrible things for too long, and any punishment he can’t escape would be a relief for those he’s harmed.

Kim Tate teaches Joe a lesson

Kim now only plans her schemes when she really needs to. And with Joe acting so wildly, who could deliver a better revenge than Kim Tate?

Graham thinks Kim is negatively influencing Joe and even believes she’s tried to harm him. However, Graham might realize Joe is actually the one causing problems, which could lead him to join forces with Kim. While faking Kim’s death has been a common plot device, Joe wouldn’t expect Graham to do it, and they could even make it appear as if Joe was responsible.

Honestly, Kim doesn’t need anyone to help her get revenge. She’s perfectly capable of taking matters into her own hands, and she’s not afraid to go to extreme lengths. She really has the power to dismantle Joe’s entire life, particularly his money, which seems to mean everything to him. If he pushes her too far again, I genuinely think she could completely destroy his confidence and leave him a broken man. It’s fascinating – and a little scary – to watch.

Whodunnit 2.0 – and this time it’s fatal

Joe has faced incredible hardship, from being thrown out of a window to being taken hostage, but he always recovers quickly and doesn’t seem to dwell on the past. He seems unconcerned even by the possibility of dying violently.

It’s odd how the villagers keep letting Joe get away with everything, while Matty Barton and Jacob Sugden are still deeply hurt by the things he’s done. Could their pain eventually lead one of them to finally react?

Caleb and his nephew Joe have reached a shaky agreement to protect each other’s secrets, but Caleb is prepared to betray Joe if he misbehaves. The situation is further complicated by Dawn, who has a history of violence and might react dangerously if Joe causes trouble.

If the character isn’t going to turn things around and become good, we might see a mystery about who was responsible for Joe’s death, and a lot of people could be suspects.

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 8pm on ITV1 and from 7am on ITVX.
