Luke Grimes reveals “crazy” truth about one of Yellowstone’s strangest ongoing mysteries

Luke Grimes recently revealed details about a storyline that was cut from the first season of Yellowstone, something fans have been wondering about for a long time.

Luke Grimes, known for his role as Kayce Dutton in the original series, now leads the new spin-off, Marshals. The new show is a departure from the dramatic storylines of the first, offering a more realistic, action-packed, and case-focused format.

Kayce is facing a difficult time, grieving the loss of his wife, Monica, and trying to figure out his own path in life, separate from his family’s legacy and focused on a meaningful career.

It’s difficult to forget past events, particularly when questions remain about the history of Yellowstone. We decided to investigate one of the show’s longest-standing mysteries, which first appeared back in season one, episode two.

Longtime viewers of Yellowstone may recall Kayce and his son, Tate, discovering dinosaur bones while digging out a tree stump on their property. Those bones disappeared, but the story was never followed up on and wasn’t mentioned again throughout the series.

We now know why the storyline was dropped! In a recent interview with TopMob, Grimes explained that executives opposed the plot, leading to its cancellation.

When questioned about the dinosaur bone storyline, Grimes explained that he was aware of the original plan. He revealed it was intended for the season two finale, and that a different ending had actually been written.

It all comes down to how TV shows are made, with lots of producers, a network, and a studio involved. There was a lot of discussion about how the second season should end, and ultimately, a scene involving dinosaur bones was removed.

Grimes became clearly enthusiastic remembering the forgotten plotline, and went on to describe in detail what the different season 2 finale would have been like.

You know, I’ve been following the story, and it’s pretty wild. Basically, Kayce just takes off on his own adventure, starts riding trains, and ends up meeting someone who actually stole the bones! It doesn’t really matter who knows at this point, but that’s how it all went down.

It was an incredible experience, really unlike anything else. Though the studio executives might have felt we strayed too far from the central setting of the ranch with the storyline, I was thrilled to be a part of it.

The thought of Kayce investigating the fossil theft like an adventurer in an Indiana Jones movie was definitely exciting. Though that storyline won’t happen now, we at least have closure and understand why it was dropped.
