Avalanche Studios, the team behind the Just Cause games, appears to be starting work on a new open-world title. This comes a few months after they closed their Liverpool studio. A recent job posting for a Senior Technical Designer suggests the new project is underway, though the position is only temporary, scheduled to end on February 28, 2027.
So, I saw this job posting and it sounds awesome! Basically, I’d be a key part of building a brand new, huge AAA game. It’s a pretty broad role – I’d be helping with the technical design stuff around the studio, supporting the gameplay programmers, and making sure all the different teams – art, design, you name it – are working together smoothly. The cool part is they’re building it with their own engine, called Apex, and a visual scripting tool. They want someone who’s used to visual scripting, so experience with something like that is a must!
This position is located at Avalanche Studios’ Stockholm office in Södermalm, a neighborhood that has heavily influenced the studio’s games. The studio points to the area’s rich greenery as inspiration for games like Just Cause and theHunter: Call of the Wild, and its weathered metal structures as inspiration for Mad Max.
The most recent games published by the Avalanche Studios Group were Call of the Wild: The Angler in 2022 and Ravenbound in 2023. Avalanche Studios itself last published Rage 2 in 2019, in partnership with Bethesda Softworks. After that, the studio decided to concentrate on creating and publishing its own original games independently.
Avalanche Studios opened its Liverpool office in June 2020, but closed it in September 2025. The company explained the decision was due to difficulties facing both their business and the wider industry, and that they had carefully considered all possible alternatives.
The studio announced it will be making changes to where and how it produces content. In a statement, they said they’ve decided to close their Liverpool studio and are legally required to consult with employees about this change. The studios in Malmö and Stockholm will also be affected, with some job losses and organizational changes planned to better support their game development.
For a while, Avalanche Studios hadn’t publicly announced any major new projects, but rumors have been circulating. Back in 2022, a rumor emerged suggesting they might be developing a sequel to the 2015 game, Mad Max. This speculation began when artist Wendy W Fok shared a photo of herself being scanned at the studio for photogrammetry and tagged the official Mad Max game account on social media.
