A Controversial Sci-Fi Adaptation is Heading to Hulu (But It’s Better Than You Remember)

Science fiction is a hugely popular movie genre, but adaptations – especially those based on books – often spark debate. Fans often have strong ideas about how a story should be told, and movies don’t always live up to those expectations. This is currently the case with a well-known 2004 Will Smith film, which will be available to stream again in May.

Hulu will once again offer the movie I, Robot starting May 1st. It was previously available on the platform in February. Directed by Alex Proyas and featuring Will Smith, Bridget Moynahan, Bruce Greenwood, James Cromwell, and Alan Tudyk, the film shares a title with Isaac Asimov’s 1950 short story collection, but the two are quite different. While the stories provided a basic idea, the movie tells a completely separate story. Though reviews were mixed when it first came out, many now consider I, Robot to be better than it was originally perceived.

I, Robot Hits Different Two Decades After Its Initial Release

One reason the movie I, Robot holds up well today is its relevance to our current advancements in artificial intelligence. Set in a 2035 Chicago, the film depicts a world where intelligent robots work in public service, guided by the Three Laws of Robotics to ensure human safety. When the founder of a robotics company seemingly commits suicide, Detective Del Spooner suspects a robot named Sunny is behind the crime. However, his investigation quickly reveals a much larger and more dangerous plot.

Even though I, Robot came out some time ago, its ideas about artificial intelligence feel incredibly relevant today, in 2026. As AI becomes more and more a part of our daily lives, the film’s depiction of robots potentially becoming a danger—or even controlling humanity—is especially thought-provoking. When it was first released, opinions were mixed about how well the movie captured the spirit of Isaac Asimov’s original stories. Some also criticized the visual effects, despite the film receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects. You can watch I, Robot again when it returns to Hulu on May 1st.
