In the original Star Wars film, Obi-Wan Kenobi informs Luke Skywalker that Darth Vader was responsible for hunting down and eliminating the Jedi Knights. However, as the Star Wars story has grown, it’s been revealed that Vader wasn’t acting alone. After the Empire gained power, Emperor Palpatine created a group of powerful and ruthless hunters called the Inquisitors to find any Jedi who survived Order 66. These Inquisitors have since appeared in several Star Wars stories set between the prequel and original films, including the Obi-Wan Kenobi series and the Jedi video games.
Lucasfilm’s new animated series, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, brings back the Inquisitors. Marrok, who first appeared in Season 1 of Ahsoka, has a supporting role. He accompanies the Imperial army as they seize control of Janix, searching for Maul. While the younger Marrok is shown as a formidable fighter in Shadow Lord, a particular scene highlights that he isn’t as powerful a foe as Darth Vader.
Darth Vader Made a Move Marrok Didn’t Even Try On Shadow Lord

The latest episode of Shadow Lord, titled “Chapter Six: Night of the Hunted,” opens with Marrok confronting Captain Lawson in a fight against Jedi Eeko-Dio Daki and Devon Izara. While trying to escape, Devon manages to commandeer an Imperial gunship, and she, Eeko-Dio, Lawson, and Lawson’s son, Rylee, all board it and fly away. Interestingly, Marrok could have used the Force to stop the ship, but he doesn’t even attempt to. This highlights just how much more powerful Darth Vader is compared to his Inquisitors.
In the fifth episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth Vader demonstrated his immense power by using the Force to pull a transport ship out of the sky while chasing Obi-Wan and the Path. This impressive feat likely would have been successful in capturing them, but Obi-Wan anticipated Vader’s tendency to act rashly, which allowed the group to escape. If Vader had been closer behind Daki and Devon, he definitely would have crashed the ship, relentlessly pursuing his goal of either killing Obi-Wan and Lawson, or capturing them for questioning and torture.
Although the story doesn’t directly state why Marrok doesn’t attempt to seize the gunship, it suggests he isn’t powerful enough. While strong in the Force, he isn’t on the same level as figures like Vader or Sidious, both exceptionally powerful individuals. Recognizing his limits, Marrok chose to let the Jedi and Lawson escape in the other gunships and instead sought an alternate way to rejoin the chase.
The Empire is trying to stop Maul’s growing criminal operation and eliminate more Jedi. To gain an advantage, they might go to extreme lengths. The episode “Night of the Hunted” concludes with Marrok speaking to a hidden figure via hologram, which has sparked speculation among fans that a confrontation between Darth Vader and Maul is being set up. If the Inquisitors are struggling to deal with Maul, it would make logical sense for the Empire to send Darth Vader himself to resolve the situation.
