Final Fantasy XIV is set to launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 later this year, according to a recent announcement.
The announcement was made during the main presentation at Fan Fest 2026 in Anaheim this weekend.
Square Enix president Takashi Kiyru announced at a recent event that Final Fantasy Online will be available on the Nintendo Switch 2, expressing the company’s excitement about bringing the game to the platform.
The game is scheduled to release on the console later this year, after a short testing phase. Kiyru explained that they’re aiming for an August launch for the Switch 2 version, but will first run a month-long early access period to ensure their servers can handle the player load.
Good news for players: you won’t need a Nintendo Switch Online membership to play online with the new Switch 2. Usually, that subscription is required for online gaming on Switch, but it won’t be necessary for this game.

The game launched on PlayStation 3 and PC back in 2013 and has been available on consoles ever since.
This is the first time the game has appeared on a Nintendo console, as it wasn’t previously available on either the Wii U or the original Nintendo Switch.
Final Fantasy XIV wasn’t available on Xbox until 2024, and it launched specifically for the Xbox Series X/S consoles.
The game won’t be released on the original Nintendo Switch, probably because the console doesn’t have enough power for upcoming updates. Square Enix plans to stop supporting the PlayStation 4 in two years for the same reason – it can’t handle future content.
Square Enix’s Fan Fest has been a success, highlighted by the official reveal of ‘Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold,’ the game’s next expansion, which is slated for release in early 2027.
