Isla is dealing with a lot – she’s building a basketball program, and her family life is complicated, requiring her to juggle many responsibilities.
I’m really hooked on Season 1! It looks like Isla, played by Kate Hudson, is going to be caught in a complicated love triangle with her fiancé, Lev, and her former coach, Jay. But what I find fascinating is that it’s not just about who she chooses. It seems like she’s really figuring out what she truly needs versus what she simply wants, and that’s driving the whole story.
Okay, so at the end of season one, Lev and Isla broke up, and honestly, it was a really interesting moment. Instead of immediately jumping into something with Jay, Isla decided to really focus on herself – her career with the LA Waves and just figuring out who she is as a person, separate from either of them. It wasn’t about picking a side, but about her own journey, which I really loved!
As the show moves into its second season, the relationship between the two men becomes more complicated, as each embodies a different facet of Isla’s personality. According to David Stassen, the creator of Running Point, Tatiana Hullender of ScreenRant learned that despite her difficult choice, Isla’s true first love remains basketball.
Isla’s Connection To Both Lev & Jay Forces Her To Look Inward
Isla feels torn between Lev and Jay because they represent different sides of her life. She shares a strong connection with Jay through their mutual love of basketball and the exciting world of sports. With Lev, she feels a pull towards a calmer, more down-to-earth lifestyle that feels within reach. Although they don’t connect over sports, Lev understands her on a deeper, more personal level, making the situation increasingly complicated and messy as the love triangle develops in season two.
We often see Isla’s passion for basketball as her first love, which creates a strong, long-standing connection with her coach, Jay. That existing friendship gives Lev a lot to overcome. Max Greenfield, who plays Lev, is fantastic, and he and Kate (Isla) had instant chemistry. Max’s performance is so good that you find yourself hoping he and Isla end up together, but Jay Ellis, as Jay, is also compelling, and you want Isla to be happy with either of them. It’s a fun dynamic, and we’re constantly discussing how difficult this love triangle is for Isla – we genuinely like them all!
A New Coach Paves The Way For Isla’s Relationship With Jay
Isla hasn’t decided if she prefers Jay over Lev, but with Jay no longer her team’s coach, they can explore a connection beyond their working relationship. However, his new position with a rival team, Seattle, complicates things, adding both professional and personal pressure to their dynamic.
Bringing in Ray Romano as Norm Stinson, the team’s new coach, changes the atmosphere in the office. Norm’s quirky personality creates a lot of unexpected moments, both during practices and away from the game.
David Stassen is a unique addition to the team. He’s direct and a bit rough around the edges, but also provides a paternal presence. He’s incredibly knowledgeable about basketball, though not as polished as Jay. His career suffered because he struggled with self-presentation – he wasn’t like the charismatic, stylish coaches of the past. He has the strategic mind for the job, but doesn’t always project that image effectively. Isla recognizes his basketball genius, which is why she decided to hire him.
