Final Fantasy 14 is set to change significantly with the arrival of the Evercold expansion in January 2027. Square Enix revealed details about the game’s next chapter at the Final Fantasy USA Fan Fest in Anaheim, California, and the updates they’ve planned are truly impressive.
Alongside new updates, the biggest surprise was a huge crossover with Neon Genesis Evangelion. Producer Naoki Yoshida announced that this crossover would be a multi-part “Alliance Raid” series, meaning fans would enjoy *Evathemed content for months to come. The announcement caused a massive reaction from the audience at the event in Anaheim, and it’s easy to see why.
Beyond those changes, Final Fantasy 14 is getting some more complex adjustments to how it works. Players are already talking about these changes on Reddit and how they might affect the game going forward, so if you’ve been playing for a while, it’s worth checking out the discussion.
Jobs In FF14 Are About To Change
Let’s break this down. When the Evercold update launches, starting the game’s 8.0 era, each class will have two ways to play: Reborn and Evolved. Reborn is essentially the original, familiar combat style.
You can still enjoy the game exactly as you’re used to, including all previous job rotations and changes from expansions. However, Evolved Mode will introduce a big shake-up, creating fresh ways to play each job and offering entirely new rotation possibilities. According to Square Enix, the main goal of Evolved Mode is to let players express their unique style and individuality.
Players are already wondering what these changes will mean for the game. It appears Square Enix understood that completely changing the combat system of a game that’s been running for over 13 years was a risky move. Simply switching to the new system without getting player feedback could have been a disaster.
Many players seem hopeful about the changes. One fan commented that offering both the old and new job designs is a smart move, considering how sensitive the player community can be. They believe limiting new jobs to evolved versions is a way to help players adjust more easily.
However, not everyone is convinced. One fan admitted to being concerned, saying, “I’m a bit worried about this, not gonna lie.” Another questioned the need for two game modes, especially if the ‘Evolved’ mode is only “slightly more powerful,” as Yoshi P suggested. They pointed out that players would likely just choose the mode with the higher damage output in most situations, making the choice feel meaningless.
Some players believe the Reborn system won’t last forever. They think it’s a temporary feature, possibly lasting three to six years, before being removed entirely.
A Legacy Combat System Will Be Available
It remains to be seen how these big changes to jobs and combat will play out. Square Enix might be watching how players use each system to help them decide what to do next. Both the current and ‘Evolved’ systems will definitely be available during the Evercold expansion, but if more players prefer the Evolved version, things could shift in the future.
Everything will continue as usual for now, including during the upcoming Final Fantasy 14 Evercold update. Square Enix plans to reveal more details about the Evolved system at each Fan Fest event, so we’ll gradually learn how it all works.
