Steven Spielberg is a legendary and highly impactful director, but he’s also a successful producer, helping to bring many fantastic stories to life. One example of a project he produced is…
I’ve always known Steven Spielberg was a master storyteller, but it’s amazing to look back at everything he’s touched! Before he co-founded DreamWorks Animation back in ’94, he was already producing some seriously fun cartoons like Tiny Toon Adventures and Animaniacs. Both of those shows were created by the same guy, Tom Ruegger, and get this – Animaniacs actually came back in 2020! It’s been 33 years since the original ended, and now it’s doing really well on streaming, according to FlixPatrol. It just proves great animation never gets old.
The animated series Animaniacs has quickly become the most popular show on Apple TV in the United States, surpassing Heroes. This achievement follows the show’s successful revival just one week ago. Animaniacs premiered at number one on the U.S. Apple TV Store charts on April 18th, and also reached ninth place worldwide.
Animaniacs Was Rebooted by Hulu Two Decades Later
Tom Ruegger created the funny animated series Animaniacs in 1993, which originally aired on Fox Kids before moving to The WB in 1995. The show ran for 99 episodes, with the last one airing on November 14, 1998.
The Animaniacs was a show featuring a variety of characters inspired by classic Warner Bros. personalities, and it was originally set in the 1930s. The series received many awards and was brought back in 2020 by Hulu. While Amblin Television produced the revival, Wellesley Wild developed it – Ruegger wasn’t involved in its creation, though Steven Spielberg continued as an executive producer.
The show’s return featured the beloved Warner siblings – Yakko, Wakko, and Dot – along with the original actors who voiced them: Jess Harnell, Tress MacNeille, Maurice LaMarche, and Frank Welker.
It only before its finale on Feb. 17, 2023, after 36 episodes.
The Animaniacs Reboot Didn’t Have the Same Spark
The original show hasn’t been reviewed, but the 2020 reboot has been well-received by critics, earning a 90% approval rating across its three seasons. Viewers, however, gave it a lower score of 69%.
The original creator of the show expressed confusion about why the initial creative team wasn’t involved in the reboot, and said he didn’t like the direction it took. He stated, “I had…”
Honestly, seeing the reboot really disappointed me. It just wasn’t the direction I would have taken the story. I felt pretty strongly that Warner Bros. did a disservice to the original by not including me and the other creators who built it in a meaningful way – it felt unethical, wrong on a moral level, and just bad business. And sadly, I think the reboot ultimately proved that, because it didn’t really work out.
He also commended Spielberg for allowing them complete creative control throughout the original series, explaining that they faced no restrictions on their work.
You can watch the original Animaniacs on both Hulu and Netflix. The new version, which started in 2020, is only available on Hulu, or to rent or buy digitally.
