Netflix’s Acclaimed Returning Thriller Series Lands in the Top 10, but Loses Over Half Its Audience

This series has surprisingly climbed to number 10 on Netflix’s Top 10 list, even though fewer people are watching it compared to its first season. Many fans are unhappy with the show’s new anthology format, which the creator has already planned for future seasons. While the first season also started slowly, taking a few weeks to gain popularity, the same might happen with Season 2 – it just needs time to build an audience.

The first season of Beef was a hit with both critics and audiences, known for its wild and chaotic storyline. It followed two strangers (Ali Wong and Steven Yeun) whose lives spiraled out of control after a simple road-rage incident. The second season shifts gears, focusing on a more subtle, but equally damaging, conflict within a workplace. It explores how two couples turn against each other – and themselves – through manipulative behavior. According to creator Lee Sung Jin, this change was intentional. He wanted Season 2 to be the opposite of Season 1’s explosive energy, reflecting the more common, undercurrent of passive-aggression found in real life, especially at work.

Season 2 Doesn’t Deserve the Shade Casual Viewers Are Throwing On It

Critics agree this season is a success, even though it’s more subtle than the first. It doesn’t lose any of its impact or storytelling power. While the show doesn’t focus as intensely on shocking moments, it’s still full of tension. According to critic Alex Maidy, it’s a brilliant story and another impressive work from writer Lee Sung Jin. George M. Thomas praises the show for being full of surprises, sharply critical of societal problems, and completely captivating – perfect for binge-watching.

Now that the show’s creator has clarified that Beef was always intended to be a limited series with different stories each season, hopefully some fans will be able to appreciate it for what it is, rather than focusing on their disappointment that Steven Yeun and Ali Wong won’t be returning. Perhaps they can still enjoy it as something unique, instead of expecting a continuation of the first season’s story.
