Welcome to the world in 2025, folks.
Capcom has initiated an artistic contest related to Street Fighter 6, inviting their exceptionally skilled fanbase to create artworks for each character. The best submissions are planned to be incorporated into the ‘Here Comes a New Challenger’ screen in the game.
I just stumbled upon the latest showcase of incredible gaming feats on the official fighter’s website. It’s tough to choose a favorite because there are so many outstanding performances, but it’s up to us, the players, to cast our votes for the ultimate champion. Each one deserves the win, and I can hardly wait to see who emerges victorious!
Well, except one.
It was pointed out by fans that Kimberley’s winning piece appeared to have issues like artifacting and abnormalities that suggested it might have been created with AI. After the allegations began spreading, the creator, Lilithascends on X (or Twitter), seemingly erased their online presence, leading some to believe this was a confession of wrongdoing.
Now Capcom has commented on the situation, and confirmed it will be disqualifying the submission:
We’d like to express our heartfelt appreciation to everyone who took part in the recent Street Fighter Art Contest – New Challenger Edition. Regrettably, it has come to our attention that one of the winning submissions breached the contest rules, specifically those outlined under Section 5 related to Entry Submission and Design Requirements.
“After careful review and discussion, we have decided to disqualify the entry in question.
As a gamer, I wanted to let you know that the contest submission I was eyeing is still up for votes in the Battle Hub – make sure to cast yours before the voting period ends! A big thank you to everyone who took part in voting for my entry. Unfortunately, it’s been disqualified, but don’t worry, a fresh illustration of the character will be showcased at a later time. Keep an eye out!
Unfortunately, this is just a sign of the times.
In this instance, Capcom had no ill intentions, as clearly stated in the competition’s guidelines, AI entries were not permitted. However, unfortunately, one such entry managed to sneak past the oversight.
In simpler terms, it’s only fair to give an opportunity to artists who have worked diligently on their individual pieces, so the fact that something has been addressed is good news because it means the created piece can no longer unfairly participate in the competition alongside other artists’ original work.
One silver lining from these circumstances is that a new art piece inspired by Kimberley will be incorporated into the game, providing a talented artist with the recognition and visibility they truly merit.
