According to recent reports, it appears that Ubisoft had initially planned a sequel for their game “Star Wars Outlaws,” but due to the game’s underperformance as stated by CEO Yves Guillemot earlier this month, they have since canceled those plans.
It’s important to mention that, based on Henderson’s information, the sequel was already being worked on, but hadn’t yet moved into full-scale production. The game was probably scrapped during its pre-production phase following the negative response to Star Wars Outlaws. Henderson also shared that they had canceled Star Wars Outlaws 2, as it was in development, but hadn’t started full production yet. As far as he knew, it wasn’t finalized or officially set in stone.
Guillemot, during a recent shareholder gathering, mentioned the poor sales performance of “Star Wars Outlaws,” attributing this to the current turbulent state of the Star Wars franchise. When asked about the reason for its underperformance, he explained that “Star Wars Outlaws” was launched at a time when the brand it represented was experiencing some rough waters.
Initially released last year, “Star Wars Outlaws” underperformed in terms of sales, according to Ubisoft’s statement. By September 2024, the company acknowledged that the game’s opening sales were weaker than anticipated, despite receiving favorable ratings (Metacritic 76) and user scores (3.9/5) across both First Party and Epic stores.
Massive Entertainment, responsible for the games, used social media to inform fans about planned enhancements. In a post, they revealed they were developing several updates aimed at boosting performance, refining gameplay mechanics, and making adjustments. Additionally, these updates will incorporate some improvements to the overall gaming experience, enhancing its quality.
After its debut, “Star Wars Outlaws” has witnessed several downloadable content packs following its launch, with the latest one being “A Pirate’s Fortune”. In this expansion, main character Kay Vess joins forces with Hondo Ohnaka on a treasure-hunting quest inside Kephi Tomb. Throughout their journey, they encounter challenges from the dangerous Rokana Raiders and their leader, Stinger Tash.
