Some classic PlayStation 1 games, originally exclusive to Sony’s first console, have made a comeback on the PlayStation Store, now available for both PS4 and PS5. These releases are bringing back a wave of nostalgia among PlayStation enthusiasts. The latest additions to the store cost $9.99 each, but they can be obtained for free with a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription. If you don’t have a PlayStation Plus Premium membership (which is the highest-tier subscription), you’ll need to pay $20 for these nostalgic 90s games to play them.
The two games from the PS1 series, released in 1998 and 1999, are often referred to as the ‘golden age’ of gaming by some PlayStation enthusiasts. While this may be up for discussion, fans of that era will be thrilled to learn that Twisted Metal 3 and Twisted Metal 4 have now become available on the PlayStation Store.
In the past, neither of these PlayStation 1 games received favorable reviews. For instance, Twisted Metal 3 scored a low 49 on GameRankings in 1998. Twisted Metal 4 managed a slightly better score, but it was still far from excellent, with a 68 on GameRankings. Despite their less-than-stellar performance in terms of reviews, these games were still significant and cherished by some fans as part of the Twisted Metal series.
In summary, both PS4 and PS5 gamers are content with their recent game releases. Currently, Twisted Metal III available on the PlayStation Store is garnering a high rating of 4.65 out of 5 stars based on 429 user reviews from both platforms. Interestingly enough, Twisted Metal 4 has an identical score, but it’s been reviewed by 536 users on the PlayStation Store.
For about two decades now, the game development studio that created these two titles, 989 Studios, has ceased operation. On the other hand, Sony has been inactive regarding the video game series for a while, except for a television adaptation on Peacock.
People who are eagerly anticipating a sale to acquire these timeless PS1 games might have a long wait ahead, as they tend to be gradually discounted. Furthermore, when Sony does offer discounts on its own classic PlayStation games, the deals are usually not very impressive, particularly initially. However, in several years’ time, PlayStation enthusiasts will likely find them available at bargain prices, but not just yet.
