The popular alternate-history Wolfenstein franchise created by Bethesda Softworks and MachineGames is coming back, but not as a new game from Xbox’s internal studios. Instead, it appears that a Wolfenstein TV series is being developed at Amazon MGM Studios for streaming on Prime Video, according to a report by Variety published on Friday. At this point, details about the plot are scarce and tightly held, but the logline suggests a clear direction.
The creative force behind this project is quite substantial, with a good chunk hailing from the Fallout TV series on Amazon Prime Video. Jonah Nolan and Lisa Joy from Kilter Films are serving as executive producers, while James Altman from Bethesda Softworks and Jerk Gustafsson from MachineGames are also producing. Lastly, Patrick Somerville is on board as creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner.
MachineGames has taken the lead in developing the recent Wolfenstein games, releasing Wolfenstein: The New Order, Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, and Wolfenstein: The New Colossus in 2014, 2015, and 2017 respectively. They collaborated with sister studio Arkane Lyon for the release of Wolfenstein: Youngblood in 2019.
These Wolfenstein tales are set in an alternate timeline where Nazi Germany emerged victorious from World War 2, dominating much of the world and committing heinous acts against minorities.
Multiple game adaptations are headed to Prime Video
The Fallout TV show from last year was incredibly successful, earning praise from critics and rapidly climbing the ranks as one of the most-watched series on Amazon Prime Video. This adaptation carries on the narrative of the popular Fallout role-playing game series, which is overseen by Bethesda Game Studios.
Before the second season even premieres in December 2025, it’s already been renewed for a third installment. In addition to Fallout, Amazon MGM Studios are collaborating with Sony Santa Monica from PlayStation on a God of War series, and they’re also developing a Mass Effect TV show alongside BioWare.
Another Wolfenstein game would be great to see, huh?
MachineGames, famous for its Wolfenstein series, has also recently released Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, a tale for the legendary explorer that unfolds before The Last Crusade’s events. With MachineGames now rumored to be developing a Wolfenstein TV series, it will be fascinating to observe whether they plan another Indiana Jones adventure or if they have set their sights on a new Wolfenstein game next.
In 2024, MachineGames expanded with a second studio in Sweden, though this team is still growing. As a fan of both the Wolfenstein and Indiana Jones series, I’m eager to see what lies ahead for either franchise.
The surge in engagement experienced by the Xbox teams with the premiere of the Fallout TV series has me speculating if they are contemplating launching a new Wolfenstein game around the same time as the upcoming TV Series. However, we may have to wait a while longer before any official announcements are made.
Regardless of the timeline, I’m eager to discover what innovative ideas they will explore when combining a hatchet and Nazi-fighting in either a new game or on the small screen.
