In the coming collaboration between Marvel and DC, an extraordinary encounter between Wolverine and Batman is anticipated. The leading comic book publishers are delivering a long-requested crossover event with the Marvel one-shot “Deadpool/Batman” #1 releasing in September, followed by “Batman/Deadpool” #1 from DC in November. Each comic will include supplementary tales involving other Marvel and DC characters such as Daredevil and Green Arrow, along with Captain America and Wonder Woman. A fresh collection of crossovers has been unveiled, showcasing alternate versions of Wolverine and Batman that fans might not have predicted but will eagerly await.
Marvel unveiled additional tales for the team-up series “Deadpool/Batman” #1 at a special retailer gathering during San Diego Comic-Con. Among these supplementary stories is one featuring Wolverine (Old Man Logan) and Batman (The Dark Knight Returns), penned and illustrated by Frank Miller. This collaboration marks Miller’s return to “The Dark Knight Returns“, a classic tale that has been reimagined across various platforms, such as animated films and influencing Zack Snyder’s movie “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice“. In “The Dark Knight Returns“, Bruce Wayne emerges from a decade-long retirement to resume his crime-fighting activities, ultimately engaging in a showdown against Superman.
In a different interpretation of events, “Old Man Logan” was penned by Mark Millar, with Steve McNiven handling the artwork. This tale unfolds in a world where Wolverine is deceived into slaughtering the X-Men at the hands of a band of villainous masterminds. Notably, this narrative laid the groundwork for the movie “Logan”. Furthermore, two well-known future iterations of Wolverine and Batman will encounter each other for the first time in this story, which was brought to life by the esteemed Frank Miller.
Wolverine vs. Batman Needs to Happen on the Big Screen
Imagine the thrill if Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman, were to encounter any of the past Batmans – Michael Keaton, George Clooney, Ben Affleck, or Christian Bale. Fans would undoubtedly be buzzing with anticipation! With Marvel and DC bringing Old Man Logan and Batman from The Dark Knight Returns together, it seems fitting that Jackman and Keaton don their costumes for a showdown.
In my perspective as a movie reviewer, a standalone film focusing on the thrilling encounter between Wolverine and Batman could easily span its entire duration without the need for additional heroes or antagonists. Regardless of whether this epic duel takes place in the Marvel or DC Universe, it’s self-contained enough to captivate audiences on its own merit.
As for the setting, Gotham City would be an ideal choice, not only due to its legendary status but also because it offers ample opportunities for high-stakes drama. This gritty urban jungle would provide the perfect backdrop for these two iconic characters to clash and ultimately, perhaps, find common ground.
In issue #1, the character Deadpool/Batman gets hired for a mercenary job in Gotham City, putting him squarely in the sights of the renowned detective Batman. This one-off story is written by Zeb Wells and features artwork by Greg Capullo on both the cover and interior pages.
After penning 60 issues of “The Amazing Spider-Man”, Wells mentioned that he wanted some time off. However, Marvel presented him with an intriguing proposition: write a comic featuring Deadpool and Batman, illustrated by one of the greatest Batman artists around. With this offer, Wells no longer felt the need for a break. In Batman, they found a character who dislikes Deadpool’s mischief even more than Wolverine, but an imminent city-wide threat from the Joker forces them to work together. It’s been quite enjoyable watching Deadpool wreak havoc in Gotham City and see the ensuing chaos.
Is this too good to be true? This crossover might just be the pinnacle of my professional journey…and let me tell you, I’ve had quite a ride. Some of my initial work was on X-Force, so Deadpool and I go a long way back. Lately, I’ve been illustrating Batman for over a decade at DC. To think that I get to collaborate on a crossover event with Deadpool and Batman…If I’m dreaming, I hope you let me stay asleep!
