Deadpool & Wolverine Star Admits They Have “No Idea” About an MCU Return (And We’re Devastated)

Dafne Keen’s character Laura (also known as X-23) made a notable comeback during the third act of last summer’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” movie, but it’s unclear if she will appear again in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. During an interview at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con for her new film “Whistle,” Keen expressed a desire to continue playing Laura and don the character’s famous yellow suit, but she is just as unsure as fans about any future appearances.

Keen admitted he was genuinely unsure, stating, ‘I usually just say I don’t know,’ which makes for a concise response.

After starring as Laura/X-23 in both “Logan” and “Deadpool & Wolverine”, Keen has shown continued enthusiasm for the role and would jump at the chance to reprise it someday. In fact, she expressed her willingness by saying she’d be willing to pay Marvel Studios to let her continue playing X-23. Earlier this year, Keen made clear that she is open to any opportunity involving the character, whether it’s a big ensemble piece like an “Avengers” film or a more intimate story focused on the character.

As a passionate moviegoer, I’m thrilled to share that in the upcoming blockbuster Avengers: Doomsday, several familiar faces from the Fox’s X-Men films will make an appearance. Legendary actors like Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Alan Cumming, Kelsey Grammer, and Rebecca Romijn are part of the impressive cast Marvel announced earlier this year. Moreover, Channing Tatum, who played alongside Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool & Wolverine, will reprise his role as Gambit in this exciting new venture.

It’s disappointing that Keen isn’t aware of X-23’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as she captured hearts in the movie “Logan” with her emotional bond with Hugh Jackman’s character. Her return years later in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” where she played a key role in the resistance against Cassandra Nova, was truly exciting. Given that Keen has only made a few appearances so far, there is a lot of untapped potential for the development of X-23. It would be wonderful to see this character continue to grow in future films. Since Marvel Studios is planning a reboot of the X-Men, it might make sense for them to bring Keen back into the fold. Instead of attempting to recast Jackman as Wolverine (which would be challenging), Laura’s version of X-23 could take on the role within a mutant team—whether she continues her journey from “Logan” or is a different variant.

Fans might hope for Keen to confirm plans for Laura’s return, but they shouldn’t despair too much about her recent statements. Actors often aren’t informed early about their roles in a project, which could mean that Marvel is still working out details before discussing it with Keen. Considering Kevin Feige’s confirmation of more casting announcements for Avengers: Doomsday, we don’t know who will be featured in Avengers: Secret Wars. Given the acclaim for Keen’s portrayal of X-23, it makes sense that Marvel would want to find a way to include her again.
