For centuries, surprises have been a staple in the world of entertainment. Street magicians would mesmerize spectators with intricate tricks that could take unexpected turns. Soon enough, filmmakers caught on and started joining the act. Filmmakers like M. Night Shyamalan built their careers on leaving viewers guessing. Watching a movie with a huge audience, waiting for the plot to twist, is an exhilarating experience. But even from home, it’s just as enjoyable to witness such twists unfold. Throughout television history, there have been many mind-blowing twists that sparked conversations at the water cooler.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I’ve noticed an issue in today’s TV world: twists have become too prevalent. Sometimes, writers incorporate these unexpected plot changes merely for dramatic effect, hoping to add excitement to their narratives. Unfortunately, this results in many predictable twist endings that viewers can anticipate from the very beginning.
1) Savitar Being Barry Allen (The Flash)
In the third season of The CW’s “The Flash,” the format remains consistent with the first two: a new, enigmatic speedster emerges in Central City, and it falls to Team Flash to discover their identity. Unlike Zoom and Reverse-Flash, Savitar possesses a backstory that spans centuries, making him somewhat of a speed deity. However, upon removing his suit, it becomes clear that he is actually a variant of Barry Allen, as the antagonist seems to know far too much about the happenings at S.T.A.R. Labs.
2) Jon Snow Coming Back to Life (Game of Thrones)
For five full seasons on “Game of Thrones”, Jon Snow serves at Castle Black within the Night’s Watch. After much time, he assumes command and faces a contentious predicament: allowing Wildlings across the wall for their safety against the Night King’s forces. This decision troubles fellow members of the order, leading them to assassinate their Commander. Although his death comes as a surprise, it seems the series has plans to resurrect Jon Snow since he holds such significant value to the storyline.
3) Glenn Making It Out of the Dumpster (The Walking Dead)
Similar to how ‘Game of Thrones’ doesn’t shy away from eliminating cherished characters, ‘The Walking Dead’ also isn’t hesitant in this regard. However, unlike some departures, Glenn’s encounter with the dumpster was particularly hard to stomach. Despite the show trying to mislead its viewers, Glenn’s supposed death came so unexpectedly that it’s impossible for it to be believable. Regrettably, even though he managed to dodge a grisly end once, Negan’s bat ultimately caught up with him a second time.
4) It Was Agatha All Along (WandaVision)
After spending numerous years appearing in Marvel team-up films, Wanda Maximoff has finally embarked on a solo venture with the series titled WandaVision. Unlike her usual heroics, she’s trapped within a TV-like world that bears resemblance to a sitcom. The enigma of WandaVision unfolds gradually, but one can’t help but feel suspicious towards Wanda’s neighbor, Agnes. As it transpires, Agnes is actually the malevolent witch, Agatha Harkness, who manipulates Wanda, intending to seize her powers.
5) Luke Skywalker Saves the Day (The Mandalorian)
In the second season of “The Mandalorin”, Din Djarin is striving to be a devoted father figure for Grogu as he endeavors to reunite him with his kind. At a certain juncture, Grogu establishes communication with an unidentified character, but the series maintains the mystery surrounding this character’s identity until the finale. Although there were theories suggesting it might be Mace Windu or Plo Koon, the odds-on favorite ultimately proves to be Luke Skywalker, who makes a dramatic entrance on Moff Gideon’s ship and creates chaos.
6) Jack Pearson Is Dead (This Is Us)
The debut episode of NBC’s “This Is Us” presents a tumultuous introduction to the Pearson family, revealing their numerous challenges. Despite the hardships, the family is resilient due to the presence of Jack Pearson, the family patriarch. However, he is only seen in flashbacks, implying that his life comes to an end at some point, leaving behind his wife and children, who deeply miss the most crucial figure in their lives.
7) Chuck’s Death (Better Call Saul)
In the hit series “Breaking Bad,” Saul Goodman is such a captivating character that he receives his own spinoff titled “Better Call Saul.” This show delves into the life of the lawyer as he transforms from an honest professional to a shady accomplice of Walter White. Jimmy McGill’s brother, Chuck, is one of the few individuals who keeps him grounded and encourages him to stick to the law. However, the questionable actions taken by Jimmy in “Breaking Bad” suggest that Chuck won’t be there to guide him anymore, hinting at his demise in Season 3 of the prequel series.
8) The Mother Is Dead (How I Met Your Mother)
In each season of “How I Met Your Mother,” many women are introduced who could potentially be the mother character. However, it’s only in Season 8 that Tracy comes into the story as a band member at Robin and Barney’s wedding. Despite some fans speculating that the mother wouldn’t survive the series due to her untimely death being hinted at earlier, it seems unlikely that she wouldn’t be present during Ted’s conversation with their children since she is, in fact, still alive.
9) Joey and Rachel Getting Together (Friends)
In the numerous seasons of Friends, it’s almost unexpected that the main characters wouldn’t consider being in relationships with each other. As the series comes to an end, Joey begins to harbor feelings for Rachel, which initially appear as nothing more than a crush. However, Friends takes everyone by surprise when they actually get together. Their relationship doesn’t last, but it would have been even more surprising if Joey hadn’t frequently expressed his crush on Rachel.
10) Raj and Penny Didn’t Hook Up (The Big Bang Theory)
In The Big Bang Theory, it often appears as if Leonard and Penny are destined to be together. Yet, the series introduces tension by suggesting that Penny might date one of Leonard’s closest friends, Raj. This plot twist seems peculiar since Raj rarely interacts with Penny due to his anxiety. However, the show later clarifies in the following season that it was all a misunderstanding, as Raj never actually pursued a relationship with Penny.
