Star Trek: Strange New Worlds recently hinted at its fourth season in an unconventional, creative manner. At San Diego Comic Con’s presentation within Star Trek’s universe, Paramount+ revealed that Season 4 of Strange New Worlds has been completed and further announced the series’ renewal for a fifth and concluding season. In the upcoming episodes, which are projected to premiere in 2026, Star Trek will venture into a strange new world that even the most daring sci-fi series has never explored before.
At Comic-Con, Paramount announced that an episode featuring puppets will be included in Strange New Worlds Season 4. They also shared a sneak peek of Captain Pike (Anson Mount) transformed into a puppet, courtesy of Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. In the clip, the puppet version of Captain Pike embarks on a quest to find his missing crew members, suspecting they abandoned him aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise for the upcoming season.
At the Hall H stage, producer Akiva Goldsman previewed the episode, hinting, “An unforeseen and unfortunate transporter mishap could have taken place, which might have brought about some surprising side effects.” And as we’ve come to expect, this twist was not a surprise. In fact, back in 2024, Goldsman had already hinted at the versatility of the series when he told Variety that as long as the storytelling is clear and well-executed, there’s hardly any genre that Strange New Worlds wouldn’t be able to tackle. He even speculated, “Could it handle Muppets? Perhaps. Could it manage black and white, silent, comedy? Maybe!
It’s clear that the Star Trek series has dabbled with various genres and formats before, as evident in Season 2 when Strange New Worlds aired a musical episode called “Subspace Rhapsody”. This episode saw the crew venturing into a peculiar “subspace fold”, which led them to break into song about their emotions, as if they were seasoned Broadway performers. Tom Polce and Kay Hanley from the alternative rock band Letter to Cleo composed the original music for the episode. Although it was an unusual Star Trek tale, “Subspace Rhapsody” was generally well-received.
In a risky move akin to “Subspace Rhapsody”, an entire episode of Strange New Worlds focusing on puppets could be attempted by its producers and showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers. Notably, this venture is supported by top-tier professionals in the field, including Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, who will convert the U.S.S. Enterprise crew into puppets. The episode will be directed by Jordan Canning, who has experience directing several episodes of AppleTV+’s Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock series.
Star Trek Surprised Hall H Attendees with Advanced Screening
Instead of waiting for the all-puppet episode of “Strange New Worlds” next season, fans at Hall H were treated to an early screening of this season’s latest episode titled “A Space Adventure Hour,” which will stream on July 31. Unlike featuring musical numbers or puppets, “A Space Adventure Hour” experiments with genre. Directed by Jonathan Frakes, the episode is a murder mystery where La’An (Christina Chong) tests a prototype holodeck using a fictional case only she can solve. As the stakes grow higher, the Enterprise’s fate hangs in the balance.
While the majority of us have to hold off until Thursday for streaming “A Space Adventure Hour” on Paramount+, they’ve generously decided to make that particular episode available for free viewing across various platforms from July 31st through August 6th. This includes Pluto TV, Paramount+ channels on Amazon, Apple, and Roku, the Free Content Hub on Paramount+, and the Paramount+ YouTube channel.
The third season of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” debuted on July 17th, and can now be watched every Thursday on Paramount+, with fresh episodes being released until the conclusion on September 11th.
