Sony Sues Tencent For Horizon Rip Off

Sony is taking Tencent to court, alleging that their game infringes upon the concept of Horizon. It’s common for games to draw inspiration from others on the market, but there’s a line between being inspired and blatantly copying another game. For instance, many live service games have adopted the battle pass model from Fortnite, while numerous titles in the 2000s attempted to mimic Grand Theft Auto’s open-world sandbox gameplay, and Call of Duty has influenced many games to replicate its overall style and features. However, crossing that line into outright plagiarism can lead to legal disputes, as was the case with Palworld being accused of being a clone of Pokemon, leading to an ongoing court battle between Pocketpair and Nintendo.

It appears that Sony is taking steps to safeguard one of its highly successful franchises, Horizon, which has emerged as a fan favorite from the PlayStation family over the last decade. The Horizon series is set in a post-apocalyptic world where technology from the future coexists with primitive times. In these games, players engage in battles against robot dinosaurs and explore verdant landscapes as the main character, Alloy – a young redheaded woman. To date, the first two installments have sold millions of copies, giving rise to a VR spin-off, a feature film, and rumors of a multiplayer Horizon game in development too.

It appears that Sony is taking legal action against Tencent over their game Light of Motiram, as they believe it closely resembles their successful PlayStation series, Horizon. According to a Reuters report, Sony claims that Light of Motiram features identical gameplay mechanics, themes, and artistic elements to the Horizon series. This isn’t the first time such similarities have been noted by journalists, which further supports Sony’s allegations. In addition, Sony asserts that Tencent had approached them about collaborating on a new Horizon game last year, but Sony declined. Shortly after this refusal, Tencent announced Light of Motiram. Sony contends that the game is a blatant copycat (or “slavish clone”) of Horizon and fears it may confuse potential buyers. You can watch the trailer for the game here.

The game from Tencent appears to bear a strong resemblance to Horizon in numerous aspects, including combat style and robot enemies. However, whether or not this similarity will lead to a legal dispute between Tencent and Sony is still uncertain. As for Light of Motiram, there’s no set release date yet, but it’s expected to launch on PC when it becomes available.
