For decades, Godzilla and other monsters from Toho have been destroying cities in movies and inspiring countless other monster-themed creations in games, TV shows, and more. There’s one hugely popular game series, built around the idea of giant monsters, that surprisingly never featured Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah, or any of the classic Toho creatures – until now! The long-awaited Godzilla game fans have been dreaming of is almost here.
The popular game King of Tokyo, originally created in 2011 by Richard Garfield and IELLO, lets players wreak havoc on Tokyo as giant monsters. While inspired by Godzilla, the iconic creature wasn’t originally included. Now, IELLO has partnered with Toho, the company behind Godzilla, to release King of Tokyo Godzilla. This new version combines the original game’s exciting monster battles with Toho’s famous monsters and is scheduled to be released later this year.
King of Tokyo Is Now An Official Godzilla Game, But He’s Not The Only Monster In The Spotlight

The King of Tokyo board game now features Godzilla! Along with Godzilla, you can play as other famous monsters like Mothra, Mechagodzilla, Rodan, Hedorah, and King Ghidorah. Two to four players battle it out on a game board representing Tokyo City. If you have five or six players, the game expands to include the Tokyo Bay area as well.

During your turn, you’ll roll dice to gain energy, victory points, health, and the ability to attack other players. You’ll also use three types of cards: Keep cards that give ongoing benefits, Discard cards that are used and then removed, and new Event cards which temporarily change the game’s rules until they’re taken out of play.
Event cards like Blinding Spotlights and Freezing Rain add extra challenges to battles. Blinding Spotlights limit monster rerolls, while Freezing Rain prevents monsters from buying power-ups (except the event card itself). These events increase the game’s unpredictability, and your location—inside or outside Tokyo—also impacts strategy. Players gain dice tokens from certain cards and use energy to purchase Power Cards, which can be game-changing if used effectively.

The artwork is amazing and really captures the feel of classic Godzilla movies and monster designs. The game also includes the familiar and fun gameplay of King of Tokyo, and we’re excited to play with all the monsters!
The board game King of Tokyo Godzilla should be available in stores later this year, and people will probably have a chance to play it at the Gen Con convention.
