Feature: 17 PS5 Predictions for State of Play June 2026

For a while now, people have been expecting a new State of Play presentation this summer, and Sony has finally confirmed it! It’s happening on June 2nd, 2026, and it looks like it will be a major event.

The presentation is generating a lot of excitement, with a runtime exceeding an hour, the confirmed appearance of Marvel’s Wolverine, and even special screenings happening in some US cinemas thanks to Sony.

We don’t have much to work with, but as a PlayStation-focused site, we couldn’t resist offering some predictions for the upcoming State of Play event.

Below, we’ve cobbled together a few things we reckon are plausible to happen at the upcoming show.

Marvel’s Wolverine looks reliably excellent

Insomniac Games has a fantastic track record – it’s hard to remember a time they released a disappointing game. The main focus of the recent State of Play presentation was a new look at Marvel’s Wolverine, so let’s talk about that first. After successfully creating three great Spider-Man games, they’ve found a formula that works, and we anticipate a similar approach for Wolverine’s story.

Insomniac’s latest work is likely to be strong and dependable, offering a polished experience without taking huge risks. They stick to what they do well, and consistently deliver high-quality results.

Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet gives a glimpse at gameplay

Naughty Dog’s upcoming game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, hasn’t been shown in a while, and was mentioned at The Game Awards 2024. While Sony has Marvel’s Wolverine and Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls planned for this year, many fans are eager to know what’s coming further down the line, perhaps in 2027 or beyond. We’re really hoping to see some actual gameplay footage soon, and a new trailer would be great!

More Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls characters enter the arena

Marvel Snap’s new season, Tokon, arrives on August 9th, which is just around the corner. Six characters who will be playable at launch are still a mystery, and we expect to learn about a new team during the upcoming State of Play presentation. We already know Doctor Doom and Ghost Rider will lead teams, and it’s probable we’ll see one of those remaining groups of four characters revealed then.

What’s the story, Cory?

Most sources suggest that a new God of War game, featuring Kratos’ wife Faye, will be released around this time next year. Directed by Cory Barlog of Santa Monica Studio, the game is expected to be a fresh experience, feeling like an entirely new franchise after the success of Ragnarok. If the release is planned for 2027, now would be a good time to start sharing details about it.

Break in Break In gently

Sony seemed to understand the concerns surrounding Horizon Hunters Gathering, but the reveal hasn’t really changed how people feel. They might be better off just being upfront about Break In, which is likely the new name for the live service shooter Fairgames. The best way to announce it would be to release the game immediately – a surprise launch. A long marketing campaign probably won’t be effective in this situation.

Is it Media Molecule’s time?

Media Molecule, the team behind the creative game Dreams, stopped actively updating that title in 2023. Since then, they’ve been working on a brand new game. It’s exciting to wonder what they’ve been developing for a while now! Currently, all we know is that this new project is a fresh intellectual property – a completely original game – and it’s likely to be an open-world experience.

It can only be Onimusha

Fans have been eagerly awaiting a release date for Onimusha: Way of the Sword for a long time. What’s especially frustrating is that Capcom hinted at an announcement last month, but it never happened. This State of Play event seems like a good opportunity for them to finally share some news, and hopefully give us another exciting look at the game.

The Silent Hill streak continues in Townfall

Konami is consistently delivering quality Silent Hill games, and the trend looks set to continue with a new, independently developed installment. Titled Silent Hill: Townfall, the game is expected to launch on PlayStation 5 later this year, and Sony has already shown support for it. Hopefully, we’ll get a confirmed release date soon – this game has the potential to be fantastic.

There are a Lara games to look forward to

We’ll probably get another look at the Tomb Raider remake – Legacy of Atlantis – either at Summer Game Fest or the Xbox Showcase very soon. The game is scheduled to release later this year, and with so much focus on GTA 6 in November, an official release date for Lara Croft’s return feels close. Given PlayStation’s strong history with the Tomb Raider series, it’s likely Sony will be involved in promoting the game.

Finally time for Final Fantasy 7’s conclusion?

Honestly, ever since Square Enix started releasing Final Fantasy 7 on more than just PlayStation, it feels like they’re moving away from making it a PlayStation exclusive. So, I’d be pretty shocked if they announced the final part of the remake trilogy during a PlayStation State of Play. That being said, a lot of Final Fantasy fans are still on PlayStation, and I get the feeling Square Enix is ready to reveal something soon. The big question is whether they’ll show it off during a PlayStation-focused event, or somewhere else.

Phantom Blade Zero drops a PS5 demo

Phantom Blade Zero is scheduled to launch in September 2026, but we haven’t gotten a good look at the game recently. With summer approaching, the developers likely want to generate some buzz. They’re planning to do this with a demo, which was announced and released immediately after the State of Play presentation.

The making of a Monster (Hunter)

Capcom often uses State of Play events to make announcements, and while we expect the full reveal of the Monster Hunter Wilds expansion to be saved for a dedicated Capcom showcase, a brief teaser during this event is definitely possible. We might also see more details at Summer Game Fest.

Forza Horizon 6 must be on the horizon

With Microsoft currently considering making some games exclusive to its platforms, it seems unlikely we’d see news about Forza Horizon 6 at a PlayStation State of Play event. However, Microsoft has previously announced game release dates during Sony’s presentations. Considering Forza Horizon 5 sold well on PlayStation 5, it wouldn’t be shocking if Microsoft revealed the release date for the next game in the series during a major PlayStation event.

The Streets won’t stop Fighting

Sony has made a real effort to cater to fighting game fans, and while we’ll probably hear about the next season of Street Fighter 6 at a show like Summer Game Fest, it’s also possible we’ll see it at Sony’s State of Play event. One big question is whether Tifa from Final Fantasy 7 will be a playable character. We’ll find out the answer this summer, one way or another.

PS Portal OLED is announced

There’s been talk for a while, and the upcoming State of Play event might be when PlayStation finally reveals an upgraded PS Portal with an OLED screen. With handheld gaming devices like the Steam Deck becoming more expensive, the Portal is starting to look like a good, affordable option. While it’s unclear if the added cost of an OLED screen would be justified, features like faster charging and a smoother display could make it even more appealing.

PS Plus hints are a new staple

Sony usually reveals some of the upcoming benefits for PS Plus during their State of Play presentations, and we expect June’s event to be no exception. We’ll likely see announcements of one or two big games coming to the service this summer, along with some details about what PS Plus Premium subscribers can look forward to. Considering the recent price increase and the ongoing Days of Play sale, Sony will probably want to encourage people to sign up or renew their subscriptions.

We can get through 4Loop together

Whether we’re excited or not, Sony has heavily invested in Bad Robot Games’ 4Loop and will likely showcase it. While previous demos haven’t been impressive, we’re hoping the game is improving. It’s debatable if a State of Play presentation is the best place to reveal this type of game, but it seems that’s the plan.

Okay, that’s everything from me for now! But I’m really curious – what are you hoping to see at Sony’s State of Play in June? Let me know your predictions in the comments – I wanna hear what you’re all excited about!
