Actor Jay Ellis says the upcoming spinoff series will be a bit grittier than The Rookie. He also hints that it will offer a fresh perspective on America as the story unfolds.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, actor Felix Ellis discussed how the new setting of The Rookie: North will distinguish the spinoff from the original The Rookie. He explained that filming in the Pacific Northwest will offer a vastly different backdrop and overall feel.
Ellis explained that the upcoming work will be more challenging. They’ll be filming in a variety of locations – on the water, in cities, in residential areas, and in both forests and mountains. This diverse environment will introduce new and unpredictable dangers, making each shift more spontaneous and potentially hazardous.
What Is The Rookie: North All About?
Similar to the original The Rookie, The Rookie: North follows Alex Holland (played by Ellis), a new police officer who joins the Pierce County Police Department in Washington after experiencing a home invasion later in life. The show also stars Chris Sullivan as Sergeant Nix, Janet Montgomery as Holland’s training officer Charlotte Dru, and Karen Fukuhara and Malik Watson as training officers Leah Mizuno and Mark Lewis.
While we don’t have an exact date yet, The Rookie: North is expected to come out in early 2027. The first season will have ten episodes, and it will likely premiere soon after new episodes of The Rookie begin airing in January.
Why The Rookie: North Won’t Follow in the Footsteps of the Last The Rookie Spinoff Series
Okay, so I’ve been following news about The Rookie: North, and the creator, Alexi Hawley, has given us a little peek at what to expect. Apparently, while you will see Nathan Fillion pop up in the first episode, don’t get your hopes up for him being a regular. He said there might be other natural crossovers down the line, but it’s trickier because The Rookie: North is filmed way up in Vancouver, making frequent appearances a logistical challenge.
Noah Hawley explained that the show The Rookie: Feds was intentionally created with opportunities for characters to appear on the original The Rookie. He believes the network wasn’t focused on maintaining a specific number of crossover episodes per season, which gave them more flexibility.
The Rookie: North is currently slated to premiere on ABC sometime in early 2027.
