It’s common for long-running TV shows to lose original cast members over the years, but Law & Order: SVU is different. Mariska Hargitay and Ice-T have been with the show almost since it began. However, even with nearly 600 episodes under their belts, Olivia Benson was without her partner for much of the show’s 27th season.
Season 27 saw some changes to the cast, including a shift away from particularly disturbing sexually-based crimes for Fin. Kelli Giddish returned as Amanda Rollins, which meant Ice-T had fewer appearances. Captain Curry became a regular part of Benson’s team throughout much of the season, and even Velasco made several appearances, despite Octavio Pisano no longer being a main cast member. While SVU had plenty of characters, fans noticed the reduced screen time for an actor who had been with the show for 26 years.
Ice-T spoke positively about Kelli Giddish returning, indicating a smooth working relationship among the cast. Despite its continued success, SVU hasn’t been immune to the budget cuts impacting many network TV shows. Mariska Hargitay’s role appears secure unless she chooses to leave, similar to Ellen Pompeo’s departure from Grey’s Anatomy. While the show recently reduced Fin’s screen time in season 27, initial reports for season 28 confirm Ice-T will return as Odafin Tutuola for more episodes.
Law & Order: SVU Is Fixing Its Ice-T Concern In Season 28
Look, let’s be real – Fin’s brief return towards the end of season 27 was a much-needed reminder of what Law & Order: SVU had been missing. The reasons for his absence had started to feel pretty weak, especially after the initial injury storyline ran its course. Honestly, it felt like they stretched that out for too long. But thankfully, showrunner Michele Fazekas recently told TVLine that we can expect to see more of Ice-T in season 28, and that’s fantastic news. It’s a relief to hear they’re planning to bring him back in a more substantial way.
Just because Octavio Pisano, who plays Fin, is billed higher in season 28 of SVU doesn’t mean he’ll be sharing scenes with Mariska Hargitay’s character, Benson, every week. Showrunner Julie Fazekas clarified that Mariska Hargitay will still appear in every episode. However, these comments suggest SVU is addressing fan concerns from last season. Fazekas explained that Fin will have a more significant role within the team when the show returns in the fall.
Fin is a valuable backup player, similar to how a pinch hitter is in baseball. I think of him as being second in command to Benson, and I’d like to see him take on more of a coaching role next season.
Fin has been a vital part of Special Victims Unit since its second season, and Ice-T is second only to Mariska Hargitay in total episodes across the entire Law & Order franchise. Because of this long-standing presence, many fans consider him Olivia Benson’s right-hand person. His popular character likely contributed to SVU‘s ranking as the top Law & Order series. In fact, at the end of season 27, Fin effectively took charge of the unit while Benson was suspended, stepping in as her immediate replacement.
The relationship between Fin and Bruno (Kevin Kane) has been enjoyable to watch since Fin joined Benson’s team. He quickly fell back into his familiar working style with Rollins, as seen in season 27. While the writers are just starting to plan season 28, details about Ice-T’s role this fall are currently limited. However, the hint that there will be ‘more’ of him is encouraging for fans.
Law & Order: SVU’s Cast Balance Is A Good Problem To Have
It’s better to have a large cast of important characters than to face serious budget issues, and thankfully, that hasn’t been a problem for this show. The actors have consistently returned, even after difficult departures – Kelli Giddish, for example, came back to SVU despite previously being let go.
Ice-T has consistently praised Mariska Hargitay, and it looks like his character, Fin, is secure as Benson’s partner unless the show decides to write him out. Recent cast changes on SVU have generally been well-received. Early seasons of the show often lacked sufficient female representation, considering the sensitive crimes frequently investigated. The addition of Kelli Giddish as Rollins and Octavio Pisano as Curry helped address this imbalance, and season 28 appears to be setting things up so Ice-T can continue with the show as well.
One of the things that keeps the show fresh is how it mixes up the detective pairings. While the original partnerships like Benson and Stabler, and Fin and Munch, under Captain Cragen were what made the show famous, a series can’t run for 27 seasons—and still be going strong—without evolving. Current pairings like Fin and Bruno, and Benson and Curry, are particularly enjoyable. The team dynamic actually feels more balanced and healthy now compared to when Benson and Stabler relied on each other too much. (That earlier dynamic was fun to watch, but wasn’t a good example of a healthy working relationship.)
It’s great news that Law & Order: SVU will be back this fall instead of later in the season, meaning fans won’t have to wait as long to see the cast – including Ice-T – return to television.
