There’s plenty of crime TV to watch, and soon you’ll have another option available for free streaming. While shows like Law & Order and the One Chicago series are easy to find on Peacock (since they’re on NBC) and Hulu, and Criminal Minds is also widely available, it can be harder to consistently stream some of the less mainstream, but still popular, crime dramas. Major Crimes began as a spin-off of the show The Closer, which starred Kyra Sedgwick as Brenda Leigh Johnson, a highly skilled interrogator known for securing both case resolutions and confessions. After seven seasons, when Sedgwick decided to end The Closer, the final six episodes were designed to introduce a potential spin-off. These episodes featured Mary McDonnell as Captain Sharon Raydor, who leads the Major Crimes Division. The spin-off series, Major Crimes, was initially ordered for a first season of ten episodes.
The new series began with Brenda Leigh Johnson’s departure from the LAPD, leaving Captain Raydor to take over her old job and handle the cases Brenda had solved so skillfully. Many believed the show was set up for failure, as Brenda’s popularity was a major draw for viewers of The Closer. However, Major Crimes went on to run for six seasons and 105 episodes, proving how effectively Mary McDonnell filled her predecessor’s shoes.
Reviews for the show were mostly positive, with many critics noting that while some actors appeared in both shows, McDonnell’s performance gave it a distinct feel from its predecessor. Major Crimes also wasn’t afraid to get dark, even featuring a particularly shocking death in the last season, making it a show worth checking out.
