HBO is releasing a new version of the Harry Potter story later this year, and the first season will be called Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, just like the original book. Most of the actors have been announced, and now news of a new casting choice is quickly spreading online.
Wizarding World Direct announced that Zoe Colhoun will play Morgana Le Fey in the first season of Harry Potter. While the character isn’t a major one – she only appears on collectible Chocolate Frog cards – the casting announcement quickly spread online, and many fans believe Colhoun was cast as the wrong character.
Harry Potter Found Its Morgana
Although the new Harry Potter project has revealed many cast members, some important roles are still being kept secret. These include the actors who will play Voldemort and the Potters, especially after Gracie Cochrane unexpectedly left the production.
Zoe Colhoun will have a small role as Morgana Le Fey. The character is only mentioned briefly by another character, Ron, who says he’s working with multiple versions of her. Morgana has traditionally been portrayed as a redhead, and Colhoun is a good fit for that look.
Colhoun confirmed the news herself, posting about it on Instagram and playfully revealing, “Secret is out!”
We don’t know how important the character Colhoun will be, as he’s only named in the book and doesn’t affect the plot. While not a major announcement, this casting shows the new series is paying close attention to even the smallest details. It also suggests we might see a quick glimpse of Merlin, perhaps in a magical form like a moving portrait.
The New Morgana Actress Is Perfect for Lily Potter
The announcement of the new actor, even for a minor part, quickly spread online because many fans think she would be ideal to play Lily Potter (formerly Evans).
One Instagram commenter noted the actress has the right look for a younger Lily Potter – red hair and green eyes, just like the character in the books – and could convincingly play her, especially considering Lily was only 21 when she died.
A different comment on a different post stated, “I opened it thinking it was [Lily].”
Someone on X commented that the actress being considered would be perfect as Lily, but that some people would likely complain unless a very young child was cast. This comment highlights the fact that the upcoming Harry Potter reboot is aiming for a more faithful adaptation, including casting actors who match the characters’ ages.
While the original actors were excellent, and included some of the best talent from Britain and Ireland, many of them were older than the characters they portrayed, like Snape, Sirius, and Remus. Because Lily and James Potter were very young when they died – only 21 – the actress playing Lily needs to be in her early 20s, especially if she’s going to be with the show for the entire run, starting with Season 1.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone will premiere on HBO Max on Dec. 25.
