A new chapter begins for Matt Reeves’ and Robert Pattinson’s The Batman. When the film debuted in 2022, audiences and critics loved Pattinson’s portrayal of a younger, less seasoned Batman. They especially praised his performance and the movie’s dark, realistic, detective-focused style. The film’s popularity also led to a highly-rated HBO Max series centered on Colin Farrell’s Penguin, who clashed with the dangerous Falcone crime family, featuring a standout performance by Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone.
In 2025, The Penguin unexpectedly won nine Primetime Emmy Awards from 24 nominations – a huge success for a show that started as a spin-off of a superhero series. Everyone expected this success to boost The Batman‘s next movie, but things didn’t quite work out that way. The Batman Part II was initially planned for release in October 2025, but it was first moved to October 2026, and then delayed again. Now, the movie is scheduled to come out on October 1, 2027 – over five and a half years after Robert Pattinson first played Batman.
Robert Pattinson, director Matt Reeves, and Warner Bros. have been very secretive about The Batman Part II. For four years, almost no details about the sequel were released. We only got a brief, snowy glimpse of the new Batmobile in early May, and it wasn’t until recently—just two weeks ago—that Reeves revealed the impressive cast, including stars like Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry, and Sebastian Koch.
The biggest news for many fans was the official start of filming for The Batman Part II. Photos from the movie’s location shoot appeared on May 21st, and production is now officially underway in June. After a long wait, Robert Pattinson is back as Batman! This new era for The Batman Part II features a striking new blue logo, and we’ll see Gotham’s protector continue his journey to become the iconic Dark Knight. Fans are thrilled to know Bruce Wayne will return to the screen.
There’s Still A Lot To Learn About The Batman Part II
Good news for fans: Robert Pattinson is likely to return as Batman in a new movie! While details are still scarce, we know Pattinson, Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis, Colin Farrell, Jayme Lawson, and Gil Perez-Abraham are all set to reprise their roles. The roles of the new actors joining the cast haven’t been revealed yet, so there’s still plenty of mystery surrounding the film.
At first, everyone thought Mr. Freeze would be the big bad guy in the next Batman movie – the early images with all the snow really made it seem that way! But with the casting of actors like Stan, Johansson, and Dance, a lot of us are now wondering if we’ll be seeing the Dent family show up instead. Stan even hinted recently that he’s getting ready to play “many roles,” which has led to speculation he might be taking on the part of Two-Face, also known as Harvey Dent. While it’s all just rumors for now, all three actors are definitely connected to roles within the Dent family.
It’s notable that Barry Keoghan’s return as the Joker hasn’t been discussed, especially since his character briefly connected with Paul Dano’s Riddler in Arkham State Hospital at the end of The Batman. However, this might actually be a good thing. While Two-Face appeared in The Dark Knight, Aaron Eckhart’s version wasn’t as crucial to the story or as memorable as Heath Ledger’s Joker. Robert Pattinson is still early in his Batman career, so there’s still plenty of opportunity for the Joker to become a significant threat later on.
Although Robert Pattinson’s Batman won’t be the main Batman in the new DC Universe, his film, The Batman Part II, will still get a release as a separate story. Meanwhile, the search for the Batman who will lead the core DCU is proving difficult. Andy Muschietti’s The Brave and the Bold, which will feature Batman and Robin, hasn’t cast its lead actor yet. James Gunn has even stated that finding the right Batman is currently the biggest challenge for DC, and the script was still being worked on as recently as January. There’s no release date for the film at this time.
Currently, it appears Robert Pattinson will remain the only Batman in movies for the foreseeable future. James Gunn explained he wants to avoid confusing audiences with multiple Batmans until after the next Batman movie comes out. Considering how long it takes Matt Reeves to make a film, this version of Bruce Wayne deserves to have that spotlight for a bit longer.
The Batman Part II is scheduled for release on October 1, 2027.
