While the Empire appeared to fall with Return of the Jedi, recent Star Wars stories have shown that wasn’t the complete picture. It was always expected that defeating the Empire wouldn’t instantly disband all its forces. But we’re now seeing just how widespread and persistent the remaining Imperial forces, known as the Imperial Remnant, actually were.
Many recent Star Wars projects, like The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, have shown that some former Imperial soldiers were still dedicated to bringing the Empire back to power. The new movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, reinforces this, even featuring familiar Imperial elements like stormtroopers and AT-ATs. However, the film also makes it clear that the Empire has been significantly weakened and suffered substantial losses.
The Mandalorian And Grogu’s Imperial Warlord Wasn’t High Ranking

The latest episode of The Mandalorian and Grogu starts with Din Djarin and Grogu interrupting a gathering of people loyal to the Empire, led by an Imperial commander. They defeat the commander, but a keen-eyed viewer noticed something important: this commander wasn’t a high-ranking official. This suggests the Empire’s remaining forces were weaker and less organized than previously thought.
This Imperial leader only achieved the rank of Lieutenant before the Empire fell, yet he’s now in charge of significant operations. This implies that all of his superiors have either been eliminated or joined the New Republic – otherwise, higher-ranking officials would be leading the charge. It seems that by the time The Mandalorian and Grogu takes place, the Empire is severely weakened, a mere shadow of its former self. While this might suggest they aren’t as dangerous as they appear, the story isn’t finished with the Empire just yet.
Star Wars Isn’t Done With The Imperial Remnant Yet

Even though recent events in The Mandalorian and Grogu seem to show the Empire is nearly defeated, one key figure is still missing: Thrawn. Last seen in season one of Ahsoka, Thrawn is officially returning to the main Star Wars storyline after being stranded on Peridea with Ezra Bridger. He’s much more than just a lieutenant; Thrawn is a brilliant military strategist and a truly formidable opponent.
There was a lot of talk about Grand Admiral Thrawn potentially showing up in The Mandalorian and Grogu, but that didn’t pan out. However, he’s very likely to appear in the second season of Ahsoka. With that season expected to arrive in early 2027, Star Wars fans are probably going to see that the remnants of the Empire still pose a significant threat.
