While Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump is a long-standing and well-known manga magazine, Jump SQ. is relatively new, having launched less than a decade ago. Despite its youth, Jump SQ. has quickly become home to some amazing manga series. Titles like Claymore, Blue Exorcist, and Moriarty the Patriot have already been adapted into anime, with more on the way. Currently, one of the magazine’s most popular series is Gokurakugai by Yuto Sano. This fantasy manga began in 2022 and continues a story Sano first introduced in a one-shot manga in 2020. With six volumes released and over 1.4 million copies in circulation as of February, Gokurakugai is quickly becoming a standout hit for Shueisha.
The biggest obstacle to this manga becoming even more popular is the frequent breaks caused by the author’s health. Because it’s published monthly, even a single missed issue means fans have to wait about two months for the next chapter, which can be frustrating. After three years, the manga has only released 35 chapters. The latest chapter came out on April 2nd, 2026, but it was followed by another break. Fans were hoping for a new chapter on June 4th, but the official social media and the author confirmed an unexpected continuation of the hiatus. Now, the next chapter is expected around the beginning of July, likely on July 2nd.
What Is Gokurakugai About?

Sano’s debut manga quickly became popular with its beautiful artwork, endearing characters, and fascinating story. This action-packed series with supernatural elements takes place in Gokurakugai, a lively district that conceals a hidden darkness. The story follows Tao and Alma, two problem-solvers who work for the Saragi Anti-Maga Organization.
They mainly handle cases like missing persons and gang problems, but these investigations often lead to something much stranger. A hidden threat exists in the form of Magas – terrifying creatures born from the deceased, both human and animal. These beings possess incredible power and prey on the people of the district.
Tao is incredibly skilled at dealing with danger, a result of the difficult experiences that led her to this line of work. Meanwhile, Alma is a teenage boy learning to understand who he is and what it means to be human. As the story unfolds, the secrets of his past will be revealed.
Gokurakugai Will Take a While Before an Anime Adaptation

It’s almost certain this popular series will get an anime adaptation. The only problem is there isn’t enough source material yet to create even a single season. Despite being around for nearly four years, the series still doesn’t have enough chapters for an animation studio to begin work.
If the manga Gokurakugai were adapted into an anime, it would likely need several seasons to cover the whole story. This makes it even more important for the manga to have at least 50 chapters. Because monthly manga releases can delay an anime announcement, and given the manga’s frequent breaks, fans might have a long wait before seeing an anime version.
