Bank Insider Steals $257,594 From Customers, Claims She ‘Borrowed Money’ She Knew Wouldn’t Be Needed at the Time: Report

A former bank worker was sentenced to six years in prison for stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from customers’ accounts.

Heather Pankey, a former employee of First National Bank of Commerce in Pocahontas, Arkansas, has admitted to stealing a total of $257,594.77 from customer accounts. She pleaded guilty to charges including theft, financial identity fraud, forgery, and computer fraud, according to KAIT8 News.

Investigators found that Pankey misused her access as a bank employee to steal money from customers. She transferred funds from their accounts into one she shared with her grandmother, and tried to hide the activity by moving money between different customer accounts. She allegedly took money from at least eight accounts without permission.

Bank officials discovered Pankey’s fraudulent activity on March 20th when she improperly accessed a coworker’s account to attempt transferring money from a customer. The attempted transaction failed, which triggered an alert and led to the discovery of the scheme.

Says Sgt. Trason Johnson of the Pocahontas Police Department,

The first sign of a problem was when someone tried to make a purchase using the account of a customer who had passed away, but the transaction didn’t go through.

Pankey stated she only took money from customers she believed wouldn’t miss it at the time, characterizing it as a temporary loan.

In addition to a six-year prison sentence, Judge Rob Ratton sentenced Pankey to an additional fourteen years of probation and required her to repay First National Bank of Commerce for their losses.

Pankey has already paid the bank $125,000 in restitution and is required to pay the remaining $132,594.77 before her sentence is complete.
