Killing Eve and Grey’s Anatomy icon stars in first look at her much-anticipated UK theatre debut

Sandra Oh became a familiar face on British television in 2018 thanks to her lead role in Killing Eve, but she hadn’t performed on a UK stage until now.

Ellen Pompeo, known for her role on Grey’s Anatomy, will star in a new version of Molière’s play, The Misanthrope, which premieres in two weeks. First images from the production have just been released.

I’m really excited about this new take on the comedy! Actress Oh is playing Alice, and she’s basically a modern version of Alceste – think a novelist who’s pretty cynical and loves to go against the grain. She champions causes others shy away from, and isn’t afraid to challenge popular opinion.

Despite her direct and outspoken nature, she receives harsh criticism and faces consequences for expressing her opinions – a price she pays both as an artist and as a woman.

This play, first written in the 1600s, has been reimagined by National Theatre Director Indhu Rubasingham and will be performed from June 16th to August 1st, 2026.

The National Theatre has released a sneak peek showing actress Oh engaged and enthusiastic while working with her co-stars: Paul Chahidi (John), Abigail Cruttenden (Claire), Imogen Elliott (Esmée), Rina Fatania (Indira), Freddie MacBruce (Allen), Tom Mison (Stefan), and Jemima Rooper (Elaine).

Even though she seemed comfortable and confident, Oh had previously told The One Show she felt “awful” about how her first performance went.

It’s really frustrating when you’re learning something new, like trying to figure out how to move during a performance. You might feel embarrassed or completely forget what you’re supposed to do. But those awkward moments are a necessary part of developing a play and creating a believable character.

She expressed her excitement about performing on stage, explaining that she loves the entire acting process. She especially cherishes rehearsals, describing them as a special time to experiment, explore her instincts, and fully express herself.

Oh explained she was attracted to the character of Alice because of her honesty. Having often played powerful female roles, Oh felt Alice’s anger allowed her to express a kind of raw truthfulness, something many people can relate to.

“Very rarely do you get to play a character where you can describe and say exactly what you mean.”

You can see The Misanthrope at the National Theatre from June 16th to August 1st, 2026. Tickets are available through TodayTix.
