Nicola Walker discusses her excitement about starring in the new series Alice and Steve, explaining why she didn’t research similar shows beforehand, and hinting at whether she’d be interested in continuing the series beyond the current run.
When I first read the script, I immediately knew I wanted to play Alice. I hadn’t seen a character quite like her in a long time – a smart and dedicated mother who hasn’t quite reached her full potential professionally, and also a fantastic friend.
I have a close friend named Rick who’s been in my life for as long as I can remember. He’s an actor, and we’re incredibly similar – almost like two sides of the same coin. It sometimes feels like we’re the same person, just in different genders.
I found Alice compelling because she firmly believes she’s always right, even though her actions often suggest otherwise. That mix of strong conviction and questionable behavior was fascinating. Even more troubling is the relationship between her daughter and her best friend – it’s a boundary that should never have been crossed, and Steve, especially, should have understood that. It’s a significant betrayal.
I didn’t watch any shows about relationships with big age differences while getting ready for the role – honestly, I’m just a bit lazy as an actor! What I mean is, I always believe the script provides everything I need. I’m a big admirer of Jemaine, but I didn’t tell him that right away because I worried it might be a little overwhelming. Luckily, he took it really well. I’m sure he’s used to actors telling him how great they think he is!
Jemaine and Yali [Topol Margalith] did an amazing job portraying the complex relationship between Steve and Izzy. It was a difficult role, and they handled it beautifully. When I watched the scene where they first kiss, my initial reaction as Alice was to intervene—maybe even stop them! But as a viewer, I completely understood the connection between them; there was a definite chemistry and a real reason for the kiss.

As a viewer, I recently encountered a screen asking for permission to load content powered by Google reCAPTCHA. Basically, the site wants to make sure a real person is using it, not a bot, and reCAPTCHA is how they do that. They’re upfront about it, asking for my consent before anything loads, and letting me know that it involves cookies and tracking – standard stuff for these security measures. Clicking ‘Accept and continue’ lets reCAPTCHA do its thing and allows me to proceed with whatever I was trying to do.
The way Alice and Steve portrays relationships between different generations is incredibly insightful. It’s great to see how things are changing, especially in our industry. I’ve noticed a real shift in how women are perceived. When I was starting out, older actresses warned me that my career would be finished by age 35 if I hadn’t become well-known by then.
Honestly, I’ve noticed a real shift in TV lately, and I think it’s because more women are calling the shots at production companies. As for where I am in my career? It feels a bit like I’m past the middle, maybe even beyond that – I’m in a new phase, and I’m totally okay with that. But I’m really hoping we get to make another series of ‘Alice and Steve’! I’m actively pushing for it, and I’d love to see it happen – fingers crossed!
