Steven Spielberg wasn’t always living in sugarland.
The famous director revealed that he made his first film, Firelight—a science-fiction story inspired by an alien encounter he had at 17—for just $500. He earned the money through various jobs, and his late father, Arnold Spielberg, also supported the project.
In a recent interview with TopMob News, Steven Spielberg revealed how he funded his early films. He shared that he used to paint citrus trees in Scottsdale, Arizona, to make money. His father encouraged this, promising to match any earnings Spielberg used to finance his projects – even those costing around $25 to $30. ‘I earned it,’ Spielberg said.
He remembered his dad making him a deal: if he earned $25 from his films, his dad would match it. He’d spent about $50 on film and processing, and after earning around $250, his dad matched that amount, giving him enough money to create his two-hour, eight-millimeter movie.
Steven Spielberg has evolved significantly since directing Jaws, but his father’s impact remains strong in his work. He recently revealed that his dad was the inspiration behind his new science fiction film, Disclosure Day, which will be released in theaters on June 12th.
Growing up, my dad was a huge sci-fi fan, and it really shaped my worldview. From a very young age, I just knew there had to be life – intelligent life – somewhere out there in the universe. It wasn’t something I was taught, it was something I simply believed from the start.

This suspenseful movie, featuring Emily Blunt, Colman Domingo, and Josh O’Connor among others, delves into the potential consequences for humanity if we discovered definitive proof of life beyond Earth.
Even though this will be his 35th film as a director, Spielberg remains as critical of his own work as he was when he first started his career.
He confessed he doesn’t believe in the idea of ‘genius.’ Instead of focusing on brilliance, he always starts by asking whether something will actually function and if people will be interested in it.
He explained, ‘I wasn’t trying to create a spectacular film with Disclosure Day. My goal was simply to make a believable one.’
