Looking for some free sci-fi to watch this June? Here are 10 excellent movies we recommend. They’re available on various streaming platforms, and we’ll tell you exactly where to find each one. Grab some popcorn and enjoy!
10) After Yang (Tubi)

If you missed After Yang when it came out in 2022, it’s worth seeking out – it’s currently free to stream on Tubi. Starring Colin Farrell and Jodie Turner-Smith, this sci-fi drama centers on a family trying to fix their android son, who plays a vital role in helping their adopted Chinese daughter connect with her heritage. Unfortunately, he’s no longer under warranty. While the idea of lifelike androids might sound scary, After Yang is a surprisingly touching and human story, set in a future that isn’t necessarily bleak. Many consider it one of the best sci-fi films of the 21st century so far, and it definitely lives up to the hype.
9) Passengers (2016) (Tubi)

The 2016 film Passengers isn’t flawless and has sparked some debate, but it’s still worth watching. The movie focuses on a small group of characters and tells an intimate story, and it raises interesting questions about choices and consequences. The plot centers on Jim (Chris Pratt), who wakes up 90 years too early on a spaceship carrying 5,000 colonists. After a year of being alone, he decides to wake up another passenger, Aurora (Jennifer Lawrence), with whom he’s fallen in love. However, Aurora later discovers that Jim intentionally woke her up, taking away her autonomy. Beyond the complicated romance, the pair must also work together to save the ship from a looming disaster. While Jim’s actions are ethically questionable – and Aurora’s reaction to them is complex – Passengers is a compelling, if uncomfortable, film available to stream on Tubi this month.
8) Star Trek Generations (Tubi)

For Star Trek enthusiasts, Star Trek Generations, released in 1994, is a must-see. As the seventh Star Trek film, it uniquely unites the original 1960s cast with the crew of The Next Generation – giving fans the chance to see William Shatner’s Captain Kirk and Patrick Stewart’s Captain Picard share the screen. The story follows these two captains as they team up to stop the dangerous Dr. Soran from obliterating an entire star system in his quest to return to the Nexus, a mysterious other-dimensional place. While those new to Star Trek might find it a bit complex, it’s a truly excellent film with a surprisingly moving story. You can stream it on Tubi this month.
7) Terminator 2: Judgment Day (Pluto TV)

As a sci-fi fan, I can confidently say that Terminator 2: Judgment Day is one of the greatest sequels ever made, and you absolutely shouldn’t miss it if you get the chance to watch it on Pluto TV. Picking up the story from the original Terminator, this film throws us into a thrilling new scenario: Skynet sends a Terminator back to 1995 to eliminate a young John Connor, the man destined to lead the human resistance. But, in a brilliant twist, the resistance retaliates by sending back their own Terminator – a reprogrammed model dedicated to protecting John. Arnold Schwarzenegger is fantastic as that protector, and he’s joined by a stellar cast including Linda Hamilton as the determined Sarah Connor, Edward Furlong as young John, and Robert Patrick, who delivers a truly chilling performance as the relentless T-1000. Beyond the incredible action sequences, what really makes T2 stand out is its surprisingly strong and emotionally resonant story.
6) Zathura: A Space Adventure (Tubi)

Looking for a fun sci-fi movie the whole family will enjoy this summer? Check out Zathura: A Space Adventure on Tubi! Directed by Jon Favreau, it’s based on a book by Chris Van Allsburg – the same author who wrote Jumanji. While it’s connected to Jumanji, you don’t need to have seen that movie to enjoy Zathura. The story follows two brothers (Josh Hutcherson and Jonah Bobo) who discover a strange board game in their basement that sends them hurtling into space. They must survive and finish the game to return home. The film also features Dax Shepard, Kristen Stewart, and Tim Robbins. It’s a surprisingly good movie that’s perfect for a family movie night!
5) Bumblebee (Pluto TV and Plex)

Wondering if Bumblebee is the best Transformers movie? You can decide for yourself – it’s available to stream for free on Pluto TV and Plex this month! It stars Hailee Steinfeld and John Cena, which is a great combination. As the sixth film in the Transformers series, Bumblebee is set in 1987 and focuses on the popular character Bumblebee, who seeks refuge on Earth. He ends up forming a friendship with a teenage girl named Charlie (Steinfeld). Even if you’re not a Transformers fan, Bumblebee is a surprisingly heartwarming story. It’s about Bumblebee and Charlie supporting each other, beyond the usual Transformers battles. Charlie especially benefits from the friendship, as she’s coping with the loss of her father. Definitely give this movie a try, even if you’re not typically into the Transformers franchise.
4) Spaceballs (Kanopy — Available Beginning June 5th)

If you’re a fan of Mel Brooks’ classic comedy Spaceballs, good news! It’s available to stream for free on Kanopy this June. Spaceballs is a hilarious parody, best known for spoofing Star Wars, but it also playfully pokes fun at other popular movies and franchises like Star Trek, Alien, Planet of the Apes, The Wizard of Oz, and Transformers. The film stars Bill Pullman as mercenary Lone Starr and John Candy as his sidekick Barf, and follows their mission to rescue Princess Vespa from the villainous Spaceballs and their leader, President Skroob. It’s a genuinely funny film that lovingly satirizes the movies it parodies.
3) The Running Man (1987) (Pluto TV)

Though inspired by Stephen King’s novel, the 1987 film The Running Man takes a lot of liberties with the source material—the 2025 adaptation is a more faithful retelling. Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Maria Conchita Alonso, Richard Dawson, Yaphet Kotto, and Jesse Ventura, the movie is set in a bleak, controlling future where a televised game show forces convicted criminals to run for their lives from hunters. Schwarzenegger plays Ben Richards, a wrongly accused police officer who becomes a symbol of rebellion against the oppressive government and media. Despite its very 80s style, The Running Man offers a surprisingly insightful look at media control, and it’s packed with impressive stunts and even some fun dance numbers. If you haven’t seen it, it’s worth checking out on Pluto TV.
2) The Fifth Element (Pluto TV)

Don’t miss the classic sci-fi film The Fifth Element on Pluto TV this month! Starring Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, Gary Oldman, Ian Holm, and Chris Tucker, the movie follows taxi driver Korben Dallas (Willis) whose life is turned upside down when a mysterious woman named Leeloo (Jovovich) literally falls into his cab. Together, they must find four stones to save Earth from a massive cosmic threat. It’s a quirky and visually stunning film with unforgettable costumes designed by Jean Paul Gaultier.
1) Super 8 (Pluto TV)

Many consider J.J. Abrams’ 2011 film, Super 8, to be his best work. It’s a thrilling and heartwarming sci-fi adventure starring Joel Courtney, Elle Fanning, and Kyle Chandler. Set in 1979, the movie centers on a group of teenagers who are making a film with a Super 8 camera when they witness a mysterious train crash and other strange events in their town. Super 8 cleverly combines the feel of classic coming-of-age films like The Goonies and E.T., focusing equally on the kids’ lives and the alien they encounter. It’s a great choice for family viewing, so if you haven’t seen it, look for it in June.
