Forget love stories — new Disney+ comedy-drama Alice and Steve is a true hate story.
Alice Walker and Steve Clement have been friends for many years, ever since a brief romance during their student days didn’t work out. Now, Alice is a successful but somewhat self-absorbed fashion designer, while Steve is a funny but insecure hairdresser going through a divorce. One night out, Alice pushes Steve to start dating someone younger, but he’s hesitant. However, when Steve ends up staying at Alice’s place, he immediately feels a connection with her twenty-something daughter, Izzy. This could get complicated!
The movie starts with a surprisingly complex idea: it questions our assumptions about relationships with large age differences, and then questions whether those assumptions are even valid. Initially, the connection between the characters feels believable. Izzy actively pursues Steve, they share a clear spark, and both are eager to explain to Alice that their intentions are good.
The story then shifts, highlighting a disturbing connection: Steve used to vacation with Alice’s family when Izzy was little. This past makes his current relationship with Alice feel unsettling, especially considering he previously dated her.
Honestly, just when I thought I’d figured out who to root for, my feelings shifted. Alice’s reaction to the situation was intense, and it made me almost feel bad for Steve! She went all out to ruin his life – she knew everything about him and used it against him. I mean, she didn’t just disagree with the relationship, she actively tried to destroy his career as a hairdresser, trash-talked him to his famous clients, and even got his dog taken away! It was a bit much, even for me.
I was shocked when Steve retaliated against Alice – he really tore apart her professional life and then went and told her husband things he shouldn’t have! It’s just piling on, because honestly, Alice already has a lot going on. I also understand there’s a significant age gap between her and Daniel, and it seems like she’s become a little too comfortable in their relationship, which is starting to bother him. It’s a really difficult situation all around.
Alice and Steve’s conflict quickly spirals into a cycle of small acts of revenge. While the show avoids becoming overly dramatic, it offers touching glimpses into how their friendship has broken down. Despite all the bitterness, their past and the connection they once shared still linger.

The show is titled ‘Alice and Steve’ for a reason – it’s not about ‘Izzy and Steve’. Though the romance creates the drama, the real heart of the story is how it’s damaging a friendship.
I think that description might make the show sound a bit serious, but it’s actually really enjoyable. It’s not constantly hilarious, but Jemaine Clement – you might know him from Flight of the Conchords or What We Do in the Shadows – is great at delivering those perfectly dry, witty lines. And honestly, the clashes between the older and younger generations – like when Steve tries (and fails!) to impress Izzy’s friends – are super relatable and always make me smile.
However, a weakness of Alice and Steve is that each 30-minute episode tries to cover too much ground.

It feels like the show spent too much time on Daniel’s office romance and his teenage son Dom’s first experiences with dating. The final episode rushes things, giving the characters an overly simple way out of their problems – almost like the writers avoided dealing with the difficult issues they’d created.
After talking with Clement and Walker, it’s clear they’d love to make another series. Whether or not that happens depends on how viewers react to the current one. But even if it’s a hit, Alice and Steve might not be able to work together again by then!
All episodes of Alice and Steve are available to watch on Disney+ from 8 June.
