This season’s trailer features a wide range of talent, including dancers performing with robots, sword swallowers, fire twirlers, and incredible aerialists. There’s also a first for AGT: three Golden Buzzers will be awarded in one night, and we get a glimpse of 14-year-old singer Lai Noelle receiving one of them.
Beyond the first auditions, a Judges’ Callback round will give a select group of performers another chance to showcase their talent. This helps the judges decide who will move forward to the Live Shows. Simon Cowell explained, “This extra round allowed me to really get to know the contestants, and I think viewers at home will appreciate getting to know them better too, beyond just a brief introduction and performance. It’s important to understand who these people are.”

It’s a lengthy process before anyone gets to audition for judges like Howie Mandel, Mel B, Sofía Vergara, and Simon Cowell on season 20. According to Theresa Graham, NBCUniversal’s director of unscripted formats, the process begins with virtual open calls to reach as many potential contestants as possible. Anyone can sign up for a virtual audition with the casting team and producers. If the team sees potential, the act moves on to executive producers, and finally, if approved, the act gets to audition for the judges. Hopefuls can audition in person, virtually, or by submitting a video.
Okay, everyone, LISTEN UP! I’ve been studying the audition info like it’s the sacred texts, and it says we get up to 90 seconds to shine during the open call auditions. Ninety seconds to prove we’re the next big thing! But… and this is a HUGE but… the producers apparently can change that time whenever they want. Seriously?! So, we need to be prepared to absolutely nail it, fast, just in case they cut us off. Set those timers, practice your routine until it’s perfect, and be ready to go all out from the second they call your name! This is it!
There are several restrictions on what performers can bring. Although some acts use fire, it’s not allowed during open call auditions. If an act includes an animal, performers must submit an Animal Information Form and the animal’s vaccination records. Other prohibited items include coolers (except for medical needs), fireworks, weapons, sharp tools, mace or pepper spray, illegal drugs, alcohol, and anything involving fire or pyrotechnics.
After successfully completing the first rounds, contestants audition for the judges. Fortunately, they won’t have to cover the travel costs themselves.
The rules for America’s Got Talent state that those traveling long distances to audition will receive airfare. If they live closer, they’ll get a bus or train ticket, or be reimbursed for gas. Contestants also receive free hotel stays and a daily allowance to cover meals and other necessary expenses.
According to the rules for America’s Got Talent auditions, contestants are expected to arrive fully prepared with their own hair and makeup for the initial judging round. The show doesn’t provide these services at that stage, but does offer hair and makeup assistance if a contestant advances to later rounds. In season 19, makeup artist Tonia Green shared on Instagram that her team worked with hundreds of contestants.
Contestants get to practice their performances during rehearsals, but that’s not all they go through. Sofie Dossi, a former three-time competitor on America’s Got Talent, explained in a 2024 YouTube video that there’s also a ‘results rehearsal.’ This helps everyone know where to go after the results are announced – whether they’re eliminated or moving forward – and allows the crew to set up lighting and cameras properly.
The winner of America’s Got Talent receives a $1 million prize, but it’s not a lump sum. The prize money is paid out over forty years as a financial annuity. Alternatively, the winner can choose to receive a single payment equal to the present value of that annuity. If the winner opts for the annuity, they’ll receive $25,000 each year before taxes.
