I have to say, I’ve been really impressed with Apple TV+. When it first came out, it seemed like a real challenge for it to stand out with so many other streaming services already available. But it’s actually managed to do just that! What I appreciate most is that Apple TV+ gives its shows a chance to build a following – they don’t just cancel things on a whim. They’ve also found a really smart path by adapting popular sci-fi books and, even better, creating totally original sci-fi shows. And the best part? They let those shows find their audience, and more often than not, they do!
Apple TV+’s sci-fi series, For All Mankind, is a great example of compelling alternate history storytelling. The show starts with a simple ‘what if’ – what if the Soviet Union had won the space race and landed on the Moon first? Over five seasons, it’s built a detailed alternate timeline, growing from the NASA control room to a Martian base and beyond. While the sixth and final season of For All Mankind is coming soon, the story is expanding with Star City, a spinoff that explores the Soviet perspective which began this alternate Earth. And it’s already proving popular, less than a week after its release.
Star City Is Apple TV’s Next Big Series

The new show Star City launched last week and quickly gained popularity. It started at number 10 on Apple TV according to FlixPatrol, but has already moved up to number 4. While it hasn’t quite reached the very top spot, that’s understandable considering the strong competition. Right above Star City is For All Mankind, which recently finished a successful season and has a large library of fifty episodes.
It’s no surprise that Widow’s Bay and Your Friends & Neighbors are currently the most popular shows, holding the #2 and #1 spots respectively, as both are still releasing new episodes – and the #1 show is almost at its season finale. The fact that Star City has climbed to #4 after only two episodes is really encouraging, considering the shows above it have a longer run of episodes and are generating a lot of buzz.
I have a feeling Star City is going to be huge, just like For All Mankind was! Right now, it’s getting incredible reviews – a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, even higher than the 90% For All Mankind Season 5 got. Plus, what’s really cool is you don’t need to have watched For All Mankind to enjoy it. They share some characters, but different actors play them, so it’s totally accessible to new viewers. I think it’s going to be a big hit!
Interestingly, Star City feels quite different from For All Mankind, despite being in the same universe. While For All Mankind is an uplifting science fiction drama, Star City is a suspenseful thriller that emphasizes the genuine dangers of space. This difference could attract new viewers, but might also surprise existing fans. It remains to be seen if Star City can maintain its popularity on Apple TV, with six episodes still to come in its first season.
