Star Wars’ Next Movie Will Immediately Undo The Mandalorian & Grogu’s Record-Breaking Lightsaber Choice

The Mandalorian and Grogu have become a significant part of Star Wars history in an unexpected way. While Star Wars is back in theaters, this movie feels different from previous installments. It continues the story from the popular Disney+ series, focusing on characters with only a slight connection to the Jedi. Though Grogu briefly trained with Luke Skywalker, Din Djarin initially didn’t even know what a Jedi was when he was tasked with finding one.

Considering that, it’s not surprising that The Mandalorian and Grogu made history as the first Star Wars film with absolutely no lightsabers. Even the other standalone films included them – Darth Vader used one in Rogue One, and Darth Maul briefly drew his in Solo. But The Mandalorian and Grogu didn’t feature a single lightsaber, though the Force was still present.

Lightsabers Are Returning in Star Wars: Starfighter

Now that The Mandalorian and Grogu is playing in theaters, everyone is looking forward to next year’s Star Wars: Starfighter. Directed by Shawn Levy, the movie stars Ryan Gosling, Amy Adams, Matt Smith, and Mia Goth. It will take us to the Star Wars galaxy after the events of the sequel trilogy, about five years after The Rise of Skywalker, and details about the story are currently scarce. However, we do know that Star Wars: Starfighter will include at least one lightsaber battle.

Matt Smith and Mia Goth are the primary villains in the upcoming film Starfighter. While it’s unclear who will be fighting with a lightsaber, Mia Goth – known for her work in horror – seems like the more probable choice, fitting the role of a Sith or Dark Jedi. The villain appears to be battling a mysterious character played by Ryan Gosling, who is trying to prevent something dangerous. The setup strongly resembles The Phantom Menace, specifically the duel between Qui-Gon Jinn and Darth Maul.

The recent film, The Mandalorian and Grogu, isn’t doing well at the box office. It appears audiences aren’t as interested in stories that spin off from the main Star Wars saga, and films based on the Star Wars Disney+ shows aren’t attracting the crowds Lucasfilm expected. This suggests the next Star Wars movie will return to the core elements of the franchise – specifically, lightsabers, and likely Jedi and Sith. This feels like a perfect way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Star Wars next year.
