The rise of streaming services is great news for book lovers. These platforms constantly need fresh content, and that often leads to popular book series being adapted for television. Netflix has found huge success with shows based on The Witcher and Bridgerton, while Prime Video boasts the popular Jack Reacher series. Apple TV+ is also getting in on the action with Foundation and Slow Horses, and they’re planning to adapt the expansive Cosmere universe by Brandon Sanderson for television as well.
There’s an update on the plans to adapt the Warrior Cats book series. Unfortunately, the live-action movie, which had Harry Potter producer David Heyman involved, has been cancelled. However, fans will be happy to hear that an animated TV series based on the books is now confirmed.
Warrior Cats Movie Shelved in Favor of TV Series

Coolabi Group and Tencent Video have officially announced an animated series based on the popular “Warrior Cats” books, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. The show will initially cover the events of “The Prophecies Begin,” the first six books in the series. Leading the project is A.C. Bradley (known for her work on Marvel’s What If…?) as showrunner, and Emmy-winning director Rodrigo Blaas, who previously collaborated with Bradley on Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia.
Tencent Video is teaming up with Coolabi to bring the popular “Warrior Cats” franchise to a wider audience. According to Tina Ma, Co-President & COO of Tencent Video, this partnership will create a new animated series that honors the original stories while also attracting new fans. They aim to deliver a familiar yet updated experience for existing “Warrior Cats” lovers and introduce the series to new markets globally.
The Warrior Cats series has a surprisingly rich and detailed history, making it a bit surprising that it hasn’t been adapted for the screen yet. The first book, published in January 2003, introduces Rusty, a house cat who dreams of adventure in the nearby forest. He soon gets his wish and discovers a whole hidden world of wild cat clans living there.
Into the Wild was the first book in a long-running series. It was quickly followed by five more books, finishing the initial story arc, known as “The Prophecies Begin,” in a little over a year. This launched a hugely popular franchise that now includes eight additional story arcs, each made up of six books, as well as separate novels, graphic novels, and guidebooks. All the books are written under the name “Erin Hunter,” which is actually a collective of writers and artists who work together on the series.
The popular book series Warrior Cats is being adapted into an animated show by El Guiri Studios, a Spanish animation studio known for their work on Star Wars: Visions. The first season is planned to launch in 2028 on Tencent Video in China and Asia. While Tencent Video has a US version called WeTV, it’s likely other streaming services will want to license the show and make it available in more countries.
