Robert Kirkman’s Invincible comic series is considered one of Image Comics’ greatest achievements, delivering compelling stories and memorable characters. For decades, readers have been captivated by the story of a teenage hero—part human, part Viltrumite—as he navigates the challenges of being a superhero. One reason the series is so iconic is its striking and colorful costume designs. The Invincible Universe boasts some of the most impressive modern superhero costumes, which are not only visually appealing but also often reflect a character’s personality and growth. Here’s a look at the best costumes from this acclaimed superhero world.
The Invincible Universe features many of the best hero and villain costumes in Image Comics.
10) Rex-Splode

Okay, let’s talk about Rex-Splode’s suit. It’s a fantastic design because it really works with his powers, but still looks incredibly cool. He’s a guy who turns everyday objects into bombs, so naturally, his costume is loaded with pockets – everything he needs is right there at his fingertips. What I really appreciate is that it’s not your typical skin-tight superhero outfit. It’s loose and bulky, and it feels like it’s designed to actually protect him from the explosions he creates – which is smart! And those goggles? Essential. They keep him from flinching or closing his eyes during the blasts. Finally, the red and yellow color scheme isn’t just visually striking; it hints at the chaos and destruction he’s capable of. It’s a really thoughtful and effective costume design.
9) Emperor Invincible

The Invincible series concludes with Mark Grayson, known as Invincible, finally becoming emperor of the Viltrumite Empire. To show his commitment to changing the empire’s violent past, his new uniform blends the look of traditional Viltrumite royal clothing with the colors from his original superhero costume. Unlike previous emperors who wore red, grey, and white, Invincible’s uniform is blue, gold, and white. He also breaks with tradition by refusing to grow a Viltrumite mustache, signaling that the empire is entering a new era focused on peace, inclusivity, and helping others. This represents the perfect combination of his human and Viltrumite sides, and it’s the natural result of his journey from a teenage hero to the leader of a universe-wide peacekeeping force.
8) Conquest

Conquest’s physical appearance perfectly embodies his character and the nature of the Viltrumite Empire. He looks incredibly old, even for a Viltrumite who’s lived for millennia, thanks to his age, scars, and robotic arm. His design clearly shows he’s fought in countless battles and likely killed billions. The scars aren’t just marks of injury; they demonstrate he’s defeated enemies powerful enough to actually harm a nearly indestructible Viltrumite. Overall, Conquest’s appearance establishes him as a terrifying, brutal warrior who thrives on fighting and violence. He represents the core values of the Viltrumite Empire: instilling fear, enjoying cruelty, and wielding immense power.
7) Robot

Robot began as a weak, physically limited being, so he created robotic drones to act as his body and fight crime. Even after gaining a stronger form, he kept using these drones and protective armor to overcome opponents who were more powerful than him. His most effective drone design came last, coinciding with his descent into villainy. These new drones are black instead of orange, and their larger size and heavier armor demonstrate their incredible strength – they can even fight Viltrumites. They perfectly symbolize Robot’s loss of compassion and his transformation into a ruthless dictator, giving him both the intelligence and the force needed to control Earth.
6) Blue Invincible

To mark the 50th issue of the comic, Invincible got a new costume designed by his tailor, Art. It traded in his bright yellow suit for a simpler look with just blue and black, creating a bold contrast. He wore this new suit for 20 issues, a period fans now call the “Blue Suit Era.” During this time, Invincible faced some of his most difficult and upsetting experiences, including his brother Oliver killing the Mauler Twins, the arrival of Powerplex, the intense “Invincible War,” his battle with Conquest, and the tragic killing of Rus Livingston. Invincible felt the suit was unlucky, as he became much more prone to anger and violence while wearing it. The suit’s dark design reflected his increasingly troubled state.
5) Battle Beast

Battle Beast was created to be a formidable alien warrior, designed to find worthy opponents and die a glorious death in battle. His imposing look – a huge, lion-like creature with sharp teeth and claws – immediately shows his incredible strength and savage nature. His black, red, and yellow costume emphasizes his viciousness, but also hints at the heroic status he enjoys among his people. The braided style of his mane was inspired by Viking warriors, who shared similar beliefs about combat and death. Armed with a massive mace capable of destroying anything in its path, Battle Beast is the perfect image of an ultimate intergalactic gladiator and warrior.
4) Atom Eve

Atom Eve, a central character in Invincible, is incredibly powerful, able to control matter at its most basic level. She uses this ability to create a new superhero costume whenever she needs one. Her outfit typically includes a light pink bodysuit and a short cape. The design of her symbol is particularly creative, combining the symbol for female gender with an atomic structure. Atom Eve’s costume is one of the most visually striking in the series, with the pink color complementing her red hair and the constructs she creates.
3) Grand Regent Thragg

Grand Regent Thragg, the primary antagonist of the Invincible Universe and emperor of the Viltrumite Empire, is a truly imposing figure. Unlike other Viltrumites who typically wear white, Thragg’s red and grey outfit reflects his power and merciless nature as both a warrior and a ruler. His cape and fur collar further enhance this regal and commanding presence. The most striking change to his appearance comes after he defeats and wears the pelt of Battle Beast, a visual echoing the legend of Hercules. Thragg’s design powerfully communicates that he is the strongest and most deserving leader of the Viltrumites.
2) Omni-Man

When Omni-Man first appeared, he seemed like a clear take on Superman, and his costume looked the part. He presented himself as Earth’s greatest hero, sporting a classic blue and red suit with a cape, which made his eventual turn to villainy all the more surprising. The colors and design immediately conveyed his immense power. The large “O” on his chest was a memorable and instantly recognizable symbol. Interestingly, the lines within that “O” subtly hinted at his true allegiance, mirroring the symbol of the Viltrumite Empire – three lines inside a circle. Though he wore other outfits later on, his original costume remains the most iconic.
1) Invincible’s Original Costume

As a long-time fan, I’ve always loved Invincible’s look! It’s such a classic superhero design, and it all started with the very first suit Art created for him. What really makes it stand out is how they worked the ‘I’ logo into the chest and mask – it’s brilliant! Plus, the colors – that perfect mix of yellow, blue, and black – really make him pop. Even the little details, like the fingerless gloves and kneepads, just add to what makes his costume so unique. He’s worn a few different outfits over the years, but he always comes back to that original design. To me, it represents everything Invincible stands for – that unwavering hope and heroism he always fights for.
